PacWest tournaments open in San Diego
Which men’s and women’s teams will win the PacWest’s automatic berth in their respective tournaments this week is uncertain. However, the one thing that is a given is one Hawaii school will be eliminated in Thursday’s quarterfinals in both tournaments in San Diego.
The opening day at Point Loma’s Golden Gymnasium has fourth-seeded Brigham Young-Hawaii taking on No. 5 seed Chaminade in the second men’s quarterfinal, a rematch of last Thursday’s contest in which the Seasiders prevailed
99-98 in overtime at McCabe Gym. In the men’s first quarterfinal, sixth-seeded HPU meets No. 3 Dixie State.
The Seasiders-Silverswords winner advances to Friday’s second semifinal against top-seeded Cal Baptist. The Sea Warriors-Red Storm winner meets second-seeded Dominican in Friday’s first semifinal.
The women’s tournament opens Thursday with another all-Hawaii quarterfinal as No. 3 Hawaii Pacific faces No. 6 Hawaii Hilo. The Sea Warriors-Vulcans winner meets No. 2 Cal Baptist, which had a bye into Friday’s semifinal
The championship game for both the men’s and women’s tournament is Saturday.
Kuany named player of the week
Chaminade freshman guard Kuany Kuany earned the conference’s final regular-season player of the week honors after helping the Silverswords to a 1-1 week. He scored a career-high 33 points, finishing 16-for-17 from the free-throw line with 15 rebounds in Thursday’s 99-98 overtime loss to BYU-Hawaii. Kuany scored a team-high 21 points with eight rebounds in Saturday’s victory over Fresno Pacific.
Farman earns conference defensive honor
Hawaii Pacific senior center Farbod Farman earned his second weekly defensive honor of the season with a combined 10 blocks and 23 rebounds as the Sea Warriors went 1-1 in the regular season’s final week. He nearly had a triple-double in Saturday’s win over Fresno Pacific with 20 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocks. Farman leads the PacWest in blocks (52).
Men’s honor roll
DeAndre Medlock, BYUH: The senior center averaged 16 points and 6.5 rebounds as the Seasiders earned the No. 4 seed in this week’s PacWest tournament with two wins. He had 20 points, including 10-for-10 shooting from the free-throw line, with seven rebounds and two blocks against Holy Names.
Lucas Swanson, UHH: The senior guard averaged 21.7 points in helping the Vulcans close out the season with three straight victories. He scored a season-high 27 points against both Notre Dame de Namur and Hawaii Pacific.
Maio chosen as freshman of the week
Chaminade forward Lilia Maio picked up weekly freshman honors as the Silverswords went 1-1 last week. The Kamehameha product scored 15 points with nine rebounds and three blocks in the win over Fresno Pacific. She is the conference’s top freshman rebounder (7.2 rpg) and ranks second in scoring.
Honor roll
Danna Lynn Hooper, BYUH: The senior guard out of Molokai High helped the Seasiders to two wins, averaging 24 points. She scored 30 points against Holy Names with four 3-pointers.
SOFTBALL
Chaminade drops 2 to Holy Names
Chaminade scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh to force an extra inning, but the Silverswords came up short in the eighth in losing the second game of Monday’s softball doubleheader to Holy Names 10-9 at Central Oahu Regional Park.
The Hawks (6-10, 2-0) pounded out 14 hits in taking the opener 12-4.
Chaminade (2-2, 2-2) trailed 7-5 going into the bottom of the seventh, but rallied to tie on a run-scoring double by Aja Keyes and an RBI groundout by Nicole Erichsen. After giving up four runs in the top of the eighth, the Silverswords scored three runs in the bottom of the inning, but left the tying run at first when Keyes popped up to Holy Names pitcher Vanessa Pulido to end the rally.
TENNIS
Hawaii Pacific men remain undefeated
Led by Thibaud Berland’s impressive wins in both doubles and singles, Hawaii Pacific defeated Sacred Heart 9-0 at the Hale Koa tennis courts.
Berland didn’t drop a game with No. 3 doubles partner Clemens Graute in an 8-0 victory or in his 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Justin Pagan 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. The Sea Warriors
(5-0) did not drop a set in six singles matches, and lost just 10 games to the Pioneers (2-3).
GOLF
Seasiders sitting ninth at Pioneer Shootout
Matthew Jensen is tied for 13th and the Brigham Young-Hawaii men’s golf team is in ninth place heading into Tuesday’s final round of the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout in Vallejo, Calif.
Jensen carded a pair of 76s in Monday’s two rounds at the par 72 Hiddenbrooke Golf Course. His 156 is 13 strokes behind leader Ryan Pickthorn of Saint Martin’s.
The Seasiders are at 623 after a 310 in the second round. Dixie State is in first with a 599 in the 13-team event.
