Lee Bailey started the scoring by hitting a 3-pointer and the Chaminade Silverswords never trailed in stunning top-seeded and 11th-ranked California Baptist 80-72 in the semifinals of the Pacific West Conference men’s basketball tournament in San Diego on Friday.
Chaminade advanced to its second consecutive PacWest title game and will face Dominican for the championship on Saturday. The winner gets an automatic berth into the NCAA Division II Western Regionals.
The Silverswords (18-12) were in complete control, shooting 8-for-15 from 3-point range en route to a 43-35 halftime lead. The Lancers (24-3) made it 67-63 with 6:17 left, but a layup and a free throw by Bailey who had 18 points pushed the lead to 70-63.
Kiran Shastri led Chaminade with 22 points. Tyree Harrison had 13 points and 14 rebounds, and Kuany Kuany had 12 boards. PacWest player and freshman of the year Ryan Berg led the Lancers with 19 points.
» In the other semifinal, Myles Carrillo had 24 points, nine assists and five rebounds to lead Dominican to an 83-69 victory over Hawaii Pacific.
The second-seeded Penguins (22-7) led 42-29 at halftime and were in control the rest of the way. Justin Long and Leif Rodney each scored 15 for the Sea Warriors (15-13).
HPU women eliminated
Erin Asher had 17 points and seven assists, and Cassidy Mihalko had 16 points and 10 rebounds as second-seeded Cal Baptist trounced third-seeded Hawaii Pacific 78-62 in a semifinal of the PacWest women’s basketball tournament in San Diego.
Veanne Navarro led the Sea Warriors (18-10) with 15 points, while Morganne Comstock added 11 points and 14 rebounds.
HPU trailed 37-32 at halftime and closed to 40-39 early in the second half. But the Lancers (16-11) went on a 15-4 run, with Ashley Jones hitting three 3-pointers during the spurt.
