The Hawaii women’s basketball team heads into the Big West tournament on a sour note.
UH’s final game of the 2013-14 regular season was a dud as the Rainbow Wahine were held to a season low in points in a 61-42 loss at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday.
UH (16-12, 10-6 Big West) learned before tip-off it will receive the No. 3 seed in this week’s conference tournament regardless of the outcome against the Highlanders (12-16, 8-8).
That was good news for the Wahine, who were outplayed in nearly all facets and denied emphatically in their bid to match last season’s overall win total of 17.
Chante Miles and Alex Thomas combined to score 44 points for the Titans, while UH shot a woeful 29 percent from the field.
UH opens the Big West tournament on Wednesday at Long Beach State’s Walter Pyramid against an opponent to be determined. Coach Laura Beeman’s team will remain in California until then.
"It was just one of those nights," Beeman said. "I am not concerned. If we show up like this on Wednesday, we’ll lose. We should lose. I just don’t see us playing like this again this season.
"We couldn’t throw a golf ball in the ocean."
Meanwhile, the Titans sank eight of 21 3-point attempts.
Senior forward Kamilah Jackson, UH’s top scorer and rebounder, missed her sixth straight game with a sprained right foot. The Wahine won four out of the first five without her, but were unable to muster much this time on a tough two-day turnaround coming off a 13-point win on senior night at the Stan Sheriff Center.
Beeman, who said the 48-hour window between the distant games might have been a factor, added that Jackson is still "day to day" heading into the conference tournament.
Senior guard Sydney Haydel led UH with 10 points. Destiny King added nine points and seven rebounds.
