The Hawaii baseball team looks back at its season-opening series against Oregon as one of missed opportunities.
The Rainbow Warriors will do the same when they think about their recently finished trip to Austin, Texas.
Despite scoring first in all four games and finishing the series deadlocked in runs scored with 11 apiece, the Rainbow Warriors lost three of four to the 10th-ranked Longhorns after getting beat twice on Sunday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
UH dropped the first game, which had been suspended after seven innings on Saturday, 3-2, before losing the final game of the series 4-1.
Hawaii was held to four hits and scored only once in 11 total innings played on Sunday.
"Today was the disappointing day because we didn’t play as well as we have been playing the last few weeks," Hawaii coach Mike Trapasso said. "It’s disappointing to go 1-3 as well as we played overall, but that’s what happens when you go to play at a place like Texas."
Junior Eric Gleese gave up a two-out RBI single to Kacy Clemens in the bottom of the eighth inning of the first game, which was restarted on Sunday in the top of the eighth with the score tied 2-all.
Hawaii went down in order in the top of the inning, and Texas’ Ben Johnson drew a one-out walk before scoring on Clemens’ hit.
Juliene Jones drew a one-out walk in the ninth off Texas reliever Morgan Cooper (2-0), who earned the win when Trevor Podratz hit into a game-ending double play.
Hawaii junior Jordan Richartz, who finished 6-for-13 with four walks against Texas, gave UH a 1-0 lead in the second game with an RBI single to score LJ Brewster.
UH starter Scott Kuzminsky failed to record an out in the third inning, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks.
Jacob Felts tied the score with a bunt single, and Texas took the lead on a throwing error by Brewster on another Longhorns bunt attempt.
Hawaii somehow only trailed 2-1 as Texas left nine men on base over the first four innings.
The Longhorns eventually pulled away as C.J. Hinojosa hit a two-run single off UH’s Andrew Jones in the sixth to make it 4-1.
Texas starter Lukas Schiraldi (2-1) combined with three relievers to hold UH to four hits.
John Curtiss struck out two in the ninth to earn his second save of the series.
Hawaii walked eight batters in the game and committed three errors.
"It was kind of like damage control all game long," Trapasso said of the finale. "Kuzminsky just didn’t have it from the start and any time you’re going to your bullpen against the 10th-ranked team in the country in the third inning, you’re going to be in damage control."
UH avoided giving up the big hit and finished with a 3.19 ERA in the series against a Texas team that has won 13 of its past 15 games.
Cardenas gave up just two hits in 32⁄3 shutout innings over the three days.
Outside of Richartz, who posted a .563 on-base percentage in the series, UH had only three hitters get multiple hits in the series.
Outfielder Kalei Hanawahine is hitless in his past 27 at-bats dating back to the Albany series, and shortstop Austin Wobrock’s average has dropped to .220 after going 3-for-27 in his past nine games.
The Rainbow Warriors return home for a pair of four-game series against Nevada and Alabama-Birmingham before the start of Big West Conference play at the end of the month.
"We’re seeing roles getting defined now and we’re going to be ready for the start of conference play, I can promise you that," Trapasso said. "We’ve got to get Marcus (Doi) healthy because that’s a huge thing for us. We’re going to hold him out until that groin fully heals and he’s fully healthy, even if it means waiting until conference."
Doi missed the final three games of the series after aggravating a nagging groin injury on his only hit on Friday.
Hawaii’s next series, against the Wolf Pack, starts Friday night.
