Electrical outlet blamed in Waipahu blaze
A faulty electrical outlet in a bedroom caused a Waipahu house fire Sunday that displaced eight people and caused $150,000 in damage, according to the Honolulu Fire Department.
HFD Capt. Terry Seelig said a fire investigator determined the cause Monday and classified it as accidental. The fire started in a bedroom that was being used as an office.
Eight people lived in the single-family house on Lumi Street. Members ranged from 9 to 87 years old.
Only one unit responded after the fire was first reported as an electrical short at 8:49 p.m., but firefighters soon discovered it was a structural fire and called another unit to assist. Firefighters arrived at 8:56 p.m., and the blaze was under control by 9:02 p.m. The fire was extinguished at 9:07 p.m, an HFD official said.
Woman reports assault in LCC parking lot
Leeward Community College on Monday asked students to stay alert after a sexual assault was reported on the Pearl City campus.
A female reported the attack happened in a school parking lot at about 12:20 p.m. Monday, said Mark Lane, vice chancellor of administrative services at LCC.
Lane said details of the attack were still being sorted out and were not immediately available. It was not known whether the female was a student. Police were called.
The school emailed an alert to the University of Hawaii community and posted a warning on its website.
According to the alert, the suspect is 6 feet 4 inches tall, dark-skinned with black hair and 25 to 35 years old. He wore a green University of Hawaii shirt, a green hat and white pants, and drove a light-blue four-door compact vehicle.
Anyone who sees the man on campus is asked to call Campus Security at 455-0611.
Witnesses are sought in Aiea hit-and-run
Police are seeking witnesses to a hit-and-run crash in Aiea that left a man in critical condition.
The man tried to cross Kamehameha Highway at Hekaha Street when he was hit by a driver at 12:24 a.m. Saturday, police said. The driver did not stop. The victim was hospitalized in critical condition.
Police said the vehicle is possibly a Ford Ranger or Explorer, in the model years of 1993 through 1995. Police said they think the vehicle has damage to the right front headlight.

Suspect allegedly attacks officer in Waikiki
A 19-year-old Ala Wai woman was arrested early Sunday morning for allegedly assaulting a police officer in Waikiki.
Police said the suspect allegedly attacked the police officer at a Kuhio Avenue hotel at 2:25 a.m. The police reports did not say why the suspect was originally questioned by police.
She was arrested on suspicion of assault against a law enforcement officer. She was later released pending further investigation.
Maui surfer injured after falling off board
A 66-year-old Paia woman was treated by Maui firefighters for two cuts on her leg after she fell off her board while surfing at Cove Park at 8:55 a.m. Monday in Kihei.
Maui fire officials said the cuts on the victim’s lower right leg were each 2 inches long. The woman declined to be taken to the hospital after she was treated by paramedics.
