UHH shuts out Point Loma in baseball
Four Hawaii Hilo pitchers combined to shut out Point Loma 2-0 in the first game of a doubleheader at Wong Stadium on Tuesday.
The Vulcans won the second game 4-1.
Seamus Yoneshige worked into the fifth for the Vulcans and Sheldon Shishido came on to strand two runners. Jordan Kumasaka pitched to a batter in the eighth before Michael Slifer closed the door for his third save. Shishido earned the win over Kevin Lilicrop, who pitched a complete game for Point Loma.
Hilo scored both of its runs in the sixth inning off RBIs by Byron Freitas and Austin Cusack.
UHH’s Jordan Kurokawa spread six hits over seven innings in the second game for his first win of the year.
The Vulcans improved to 5-6 overall and 4-3 in the PacWest, while the Sea Lions dropped to 11-9 and 4-3. The teams play again Wednesday.
Sea Warriors rally for baseball victory
Chad Bolibol singled into center field to drive in Tyler Tokunaga with two outs in the 10th inning to lead Hawaii Pacific over Cal Baptist 8-7 in the first game of a doubleheader at Hans L’Orange Park.
The Sea Warriors scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game and eventually make a winner of relief pitcher Pulama Silva. Codey Ellenwood had four hits for HPU and Kevin Lenik went 2-for-2 with four RBIs.
Seasiders splits in softball doubleheader
Alexa Barrett had two hits and drove in two runs as the Brigham Young-Hawaii softball team beat Dominican 4-2 to salvage a doubleheader split in Laie.
Dominican (10-7) won the first game 7-3.
Gabby Hawkins (2-4) won the second game from the circle for the Seasiders, throwing a complete game with seven strikeouts. Taylor Alvarez (1-7) was knocked out in the second inning of the first game.
The Seasiders (3-13) host Upper Iowa in a doubleheader Thursday.
Silverswords split with Peacocks
Chaminade’s Kaitlyn Watanabe threw a shutout and Ciana Russ hit a two-run homer in the third inning as the Silverswords won 3-0 to split a doubleheader with Upper Iowa at Central Oahu Regional Park.
Upper Iowa (5-9) won the first game 3-0 on a five-hitter by Brooke Redmond. Chaminade dropped to 5-5.
Wahine golfers ninth in Thompson tourney
Hawaii’s Nichole Cruz shot a pair of 75s in the Donnis Thompson Invitational at the Kaneohe Klipper Golf Course on Tuesday, good enough for 16th overall.
Hawaii freshman Brianna Becker is two strokes behind Cruz, tied for 26th. The Rainbow Wahine are in ninth place, 25 strokes behind leader Mississippi State. Camino Sardinero of UTEP is atop of the leaderboard at 141, three strokes better than Kennesaw State’s Ines Lescudier.
Wednesday’s final round begins with an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
