Kan selected to play for U.S. in tour of China
Missouri freshman Carly Kan, a 2013 Punahou alumna, was one of 12 players selected to the USA Volleyball Collegiate National Team’s Tour of China.
Kan, the 2013 SEC freshman of the year, was one of four outside hitters selected last week to the roster, which will compete in China, June 17-27.
The team will train on the Southern Cal campus before leaving to play six matches against Chinese collegiate and adult teams. The program is considered a second tryout for the U.S. national team.
Koon stands out in Northwest Conference
Willamette (Ore.) catcher Travis Koon, a 2011 ‘Iolani alumnus, was named the Northwest Conference student-athlete of the week on Tuesday.
Koon hit .429 (3-for-7) in a three-game series against No. 1 Linfield (Ore.). He hit a three-run homer to give the Bearcats a 4-1 lead in the top of the eighth in the second game of the series. Koon is the Bearcats’ leading hitter this season, batting .313 with a team-high 12 RBIs. Willamette beat Linfield once in three games to earn its first conference victory of the season.
Villanueva notches MPSF honor
Seattle Pacific freshman Tracie Villanueva, a 2013 Moanalua alumna, was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation newcomer of the week in women’s gymnastics.
Villanueva scored a season-best 9.85 on the uneven bars in a dual meet against UC Davis, helping the Falcons set the school record for team score in an event with a 194.575, eclipsing the old mark by .620 points. Villanueva’s score on the uneven bars was the best by a SPU gymnast this season.
