Ten innings played over nearly three hours weren’t enough for Kamehameha and Mid-Pacific to decide a winner on Tuesday.

The Warriors and Owls left Mike Goeas Field in Hawaii Kai just after dusk with a 4-4 tie to show for their efforts in a tense ILH ballgame.

It marked the second time in three games Kamehameha went into extra innings with the game being called due to darkness and without a winner.

"These kids, they don’t want to go back home and do homework," Kamehameha coach Billy Pieper joked regarding the Warriors’ early-season penchant for playing until sunset.

Pieper’s first season as Kamehameha’s head coach opened a week earlier with a 5-all tie with Punahou and the Warriors now own an odd mark of 1-0-2 after Tuesday’s game.

The Warriors and Owls (2-0-1) combined to score all eight runs in the first 21/2 innings before the bullpens took command.

The closest scoring threats in the late innings belonged to MPI, but Kamehameha outfielders threw two runners out at the plate and the Warriors turned an inning-ending double play in the seventh with the go-ahead run on third to send the game into extra innings.

Kamehameha left fielder Matt Yokota threw out Tyler Yamaguchi at home to end the fifth. In the top of the 10th, right fielder Will Young fired a strike to the plate ahead of Ryan Kiyotoki, who had tagged up on the flyout, for a contentious double play to end MPI’s final threat.

"I just forced stuff. I should be more patient, that’s all," MPI coach Dunn Muramaru said.

The Owls took exception to a high tag applied by Kamehameha catcher Ethan Rosehill, but any potential fireworks were quickly doused after some posturing between the teams.

Mid-Pacific opened the scoring in the second inning on Jarrett Lum’s RBI single, and Kamehameha answered with a four-run third inning capped by Yokota’s two-run homer to left field. 

MPI put together a three-run rally with two out in the top of the third and tied the game on Bryce Nagata’s double that scored pinch runner Hunter Hill.

MPI right-hander Grant Doi threw 32/3 innings of shutout relief and lefty Noah Sills faced the minimum in his five innings on the mound while holding the Warriors without a hit. Sills struck out four and his lone blemish, a walk in the bottom of the seventh, was erased by a double play.

Kamehameha also got shutout relief from Ulu Farm for 31/3 innings, Codie Paiva for three and Josh Souza for the final inning.

"It’s one of those things where it hurts, but at the same time there’s good that came out of it. I hope we can build on it," Pieper said.
