Kakaako high-rise bill survives at Capitol
A bill at the state Legislature that proposes to make more affordable housing a requirement for high-rise developers in Kakaako got renewed life Friday.
The measure, Senate Bill 2699, previously appeared dead because it was referred to three House committees and didn’t meet a deadline for an initial hearing last week. But on Friday the bill was referred again to just the House Finance Committee.
SB 2699 would require that new high-rise towers in Kakaako make 10 percent of units affordable to households earning below 80 percent of Honolulu’s median income and another 20 percent of units for households earning below 120 percent of the median income.
The current requirement is that 20 percent of new tower units be affordable to households earning up to 140 percent of the median income.
