Lenik, Kamachi cited
Hawaii Pacific junior right fielder Kevin Lenik was named the PacWest player of the week and Dixie State freshman center fielder Trey Kamachi, a Kapolei High grad, the newcomer of the week Monday.
Lenik batted .520 (13-for-25) with six extra-base hits, including three home runs, seven runs scored and 11 RBI in eight games for the Sea Warriors. He started off the week in dramatic fashion, hitting a pinch-hit solo home run in the bottom of the 11th inning to give HPU a 6-5 series-opening win over No. 19 Cal Baptist.
In the first game of another doubleheader with CBU the next day, he hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth to tie the score, as HPU went on to win it in the 10th inning, 8-7. Lenik capped off his week by hitting for the cycle and driving in three runs in a 10-3 win over Point Loma.
Kamachi helped the Red Storm go 7-1 last week, batting .467 (14-for-30) with five extra-base hits and nine RBIs.
Kamachi was 3-for-6 with a double, a triple, three runs and three RBI in the series finale against Academy of Art. In the four-game series against Holy Names, he collected seven hits, four walks and seven runs scored.
SOFTBALL
Seasiders run winning streak to 7
The Brigham Young-Hawaii softball team eked out a pair of one-run nonconference victories against Lubbock Christian Monday to extend its winning streak to seven.
The Seasiders (9-13) defeated the Lady Chaps (16-5) 3-2 and 7-6 at the BYUH field. The Seasiders had lost their past 19 meetings with LCU.
In the opener, BYUH scored all its runs in the second without a hit, taking advantage of two hit batters and an LCU throwing error. Taylor Alvarez (2-8) picked up the win and Keegan Hanny earned her second save.
In the nightcap, the Lady Chaps scored all their runs in the fourth for a 6-5 lead. The Seasiders answered in the bottom of the inning, taking the lead for good on Kalynn Latu’s two-run double down the left-field line.
Weekly honors to Greene, Hawkins
Hawaii Hilo’s Emily Greene was named the PacWest player of the week and BYU-Hawaii’s Gabby Hawkins the pitcher of the week Monday.
Green, a junior first baseman, hit .583 (7-for-12) with four extra-base hits, four runs scored and a conference-leading 11 RBIs. She was 5-for-7 with nine RBIs in the Vulcans’ doubleheader split against Academy of Art, including a three-run homer and a grand slam.
Hawkins, a senior right-hander, has helped the Seasiders to five straight wins. She had four victories last week with three complete games and a win in relief, allowing four earned runs with 24 strikeouts against Dominican, Upper Iowa and a doubleheader against Chaminade.
