SAN DIEGO » After an exhaustive Thursday morning of running, jumping, throwing and throwing some more, quarterback Sean Schroeder had one more thing on his agenda: throw again in the afternoon.
"I love double duty," Schroeder said.
Schroeder was among 11 former Rainbow Warriors who participated in the University of Hawaii football team’s pro day — a combine-like audition for National Football League scouts — on the San Diego State campus on Thursday morning.
Schroeder was invited to throw to SDSU receivers during the Aztecs’ pro day that afternoon. Next week, Schroeder will participate in passing drills at Duke, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in 2012 before transferring to UH.
"I’m looking for an opportunity to get in front of scouts and show what I can do," Schroeder said.
Schroeder had pedestrian numbers in the jumping and running tests during UH’s pro day.
"I’ve never been the most athletic guy, per se, but I think I have functional athleticism in regards to the football field," said Schroeder, who ran 40 yards in 5 seconds and had a 27-inch vertical jump. "But I have quick feet and a good sense of awareness."
Schroeder nearly aced the field test, completing 95 percent — 57-for-60 — in passing drills. His accuracy drew attention from the 20 NFL scouts in attendance.
"How I play the position is delivering the ball and getting it into other people’s hands," Schroeder said. "I thought I showed I could make all the throws. I tried to make every throw, and be accurate."
Wideout Chris Gant, who has been rehabilitating a groin injury the past month, was hindered in the 40-yard dash, completing the distance in 4.68 seconds. He had tested at sub-4.5 seconds before the injury.
But Gant did well in the pass-catching drills. In 2013, Schroeder and Gant teamed for 53 completions for 911 yards and nine touchdowns. With other UH quarterbacks Gant had six catches for 62 yards and no touchdowns.
"That’s my boy," Gant said of Schroeder. "We’ve been through ups and downs together. We had a chance to work out together in California. I felt comfortable out there."
Tavita Woodard, who played defensive end during his three-season UH career, had hoped to get some work at tight end on Thursday. But after reviewing Woodard’s "measurables" — 80 1/8 -inch swing span, 4.65 seconds in the 40 — scouts locked him at edge rusher. One scout put Woodard and Craig Cofer, also a tight end hopeful, through defensive drills. Later, Woodard was summoned into a conference room for extensive interviews.
"It was a good experience to talk story with the scouts," Woodard said.
Woodard admittedly allowed off-field issues to affect his play during the 2013 season. He said those problems have been resolved, and he has been able to focus on football.
"I’ve got tunnel vision now," Woodard said.
Thursday also was his twin daughters’ third birthday.
"I wanted to do well for them," said Woodard, who also has a 5-year-old son.
Middle linebacker Brenden Daley was projected to test well. But he suffered a pulled left hamstring a month ago and aggravated the injury two weeks ago. Daley bench-pressed 225 pounds 27 times, but passed on the running and jumping drills.
"I couldn’t go," he said. "I had to take off to rest it."
But at least three scouts said they were intrigued by Daley’s size (6-2, 245) and strength. There is a possibility he will be invited for private workouts ahead of May’s NFL Draft.
Two former UH walk-ons had impressive workouts.
Daniel Masifilo, who switched from wide receiver to cornerback in the middle of the 2013 season, is tall (6-2) with a wide wing span (77 inches). Masifilo ran the 40 in 4.57 seconds and had a vertical jump of 37 inches.
"I just want to keep this dream going," Masifilo said. "I wish I had more years (at UH), but time is up. On to the next. Time goes on."
Safety Charles Clay, like Masifilo, is a transfer and former wideout. He was at Southern Methodist for two years before becoming a non-scholarship Warrior. He played defensive back the past two seasons.
Leading to pro day, Clay had a recurring dream.
"I had the number 4-4-4 in my head," Clay said.
On Thursday, he clocked 4.44 seconds in the 40-yard dash.
"I made my goal," he said, smiling.
Clay, who was raised in Hilo, did not earn a scholarship until last year. That pursuit, he said, was "fuel to the fire."
Clay, who rotated between safety and nickel, became one of the Warriors’ best open-field tacklers.
"I’m blessed for that journey," he said.
In training for the vertical jump, Clay tended to "over-think."
Before Thursday’s vertical jump, Clay recalled, "I told myself: ‘Get under that (measuring range) and jump.’ "
Clay’s vertical jump was certified at 37 1/2 inches. He also had the top broad jump, at nearly 10 feet.
"It was exciting," he said.
Clay then held up a metal tube and a Trigger-Point, which was the size of a baseball. He said rolling on the tube or ball can "take out the knots."
"It keeps you fresh," Clay said "Recovery is key."
These days, Clay is indeed on a roll.
