Man sought in theft of Matson container
Police are looking for a man who stole a Matson shipping container early Sunday morning from the Beretania Safeway store. Video surveillance shows a man driving a tractor-trailer truck arriving at the store, reversing the truck, hooking up a trailer carrying what appears to be a 40-foot shipping container and driving off.
The theft occurred at about 4:10 a.m. in the loading area of Safeway Beretania.
Anyone with information on this theft is asked to call CrimeStoppers at 955-8300 or *CRIME on a cellphone.
1 caught, 1 at large in Salt Lake shooting
Police arrested a man and are looking for a second suspect following a shooting incident in Salt Lake early Thursday morning.
A 28-year-old Salt Lake man was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder after he allegedly fired a gun at a 47-year-old man at 12:30 a.m.
Police said the older man was trying to enter his Salt Lake Boulevard home when the suspect allegedly fired his gun, damaging the home. The victim was not injured.
The suspects fled, and the 28-year-old man was arrested nine hours later.
The other suspect, a 31-year-old man, was still at large.
Woman hit by car in February is identified
The 83-year-old woman who died Tuesday from injuries she received when she was hit by a car nearly a month ago in Kalihi has been identified as Esther Apelin, the city Medical Examiner’s Office said Thursday.
Cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries due to auto accident. Manner of death was accidental, according to the Medical Examiner’s office.
Police said that on Feb. 20 at about 9:20 a.m., Apelin was crossing Dillingham Boulevard when she was struck by a car near Waiakamilo Road.
Parents charged in fight that injured girl
Maui police have charged the parents of an infant girl who was injured during an argument Saturday.
According to police, Kayzia-Ashley Washington, 21, brought her daughter to a clinic with a suspicious injury.
Police were notified, and a subsequent investigation found that Washington and boyfriend Dane Nakama, 20, the father of the child, had argued over custody of the child. Washington was holding the child when the argument escalated into a physical confrontation, resulting in the injury to the child.
Both Nakama and Washington were arrested and charged with second-degree assault, abuse of a family or household member and first-degree endangering the welfare of a minor. Nakama’s aggregate bail was set at $12,000. Washington’s aggregate bail was $3,000.
