While Korean War veterans Mike Inouye, middle left, and Tommy Tahara stood at the urn holding the ashes of Tsuyoshi “Nick” Nishimoto, Mary Beth Cabatbat, far right, one of Nishimoto’s daughters, stood to observe military honors being performed for her father. The memorial and inurnment for the former prisoner of war took place Friday at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. Nishimoto was an advocate for POWs and MIAs.

Retired Air Force Col. Al Streck, left, presented an American flag to Maria “Mia” Boushell, while retired Army Brig. Gen. Irwin Cockett presented a flag to Ruth Watkins. Boushell and Watkins are Nishimoto’s twin daughters. Another daughter, Mary Beth Cabatbat, was also present at the ceremony. Nishimoto served in the Army from 1948 to 1967. He was captured during the Korean War in 1950.

Army Staff Sgt. Henry Garcia carried Tsuyoshi “Nick” Nishimoto’s urn between members of the Korean War Veterans Association at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl. Army Pfc. Allan Sweis carried an American flag at right, while Sgt. Shannon Williams and Pfc. Isabel Ortega followed in back with a second American flag. Army personnel were part of the funeral honor guard from the 45th Sustainment Brigade, 25th Infantry Division at Schofield Barracks.

Nishimoto placed a flag by the newly dedicated plaque for the Korean War Prisoners of War and Missing in Action soldiers at Punchbowl National Cemetery of the Pacific in 2004.
