“HAPPY BEIJU, GOV. ARIYOSHI!”?
1. Former Gov. George Ariyoshi, center, his wife, Jean, second from left, and their children, Ryozo, left, Lynn and Donn, celebrated his 88th birthday, a milestone in Japanese culture known as beiju, with more than 1,000 well-wishers March 16 at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Ariyoshi asked that everyone present “be sure that our children’s future is going to be better, and make a pledge to Hawaii’s future.”

‘RENT’ PARTY
4. Cast members Lavour Addison (Benny), left, Andrew Reyes and Kyle Malis (Collins) welcomed Dwayne Sakaguchi to the opening-night reception for Manoa Valley Theatre’s production of “Rent” March 13. Addison and Malis give strong performances in major roles; Reyes stands out in the ensemble. Sakaguchi played an iconic “Rent” character, transvestite Angel Dumott-Schunard, in “Rent: School Edition” at Saint Louis School in 2008 and stole the show when he danced in 6-inch platform boots.

Beazley and Kahiapo opened their set with a shout-out to Dennis Kamakahi, who is battling cancer, and praised Kani Ka Pila Grille as “the place Hawaiians can come and play the (Hawaiian) music they were taught.”
