NOTEBOOK
Football players transfer out of state
It’s not just local schools that are involved with transferring year after year due to athletics.
While the OIA considers changes to its transfer rule, there is no stopping student-athletes who opt to cross the ocean.
Nevada powerhouse Bishop Gorman has reeled in at least one island football player in the offseason. Kaiser’s versatile freshman, Isaac Slade-Matautia, is now at the independent high school. Slade-Matautia (6 feet 1, 185 pounds) was a promising linebacker who helped the Cougars win the Division II state football championship last fall.
Bishop Gorman plays an independent schedule, traveling across the country for select games. It does not participate in Nevada’s high school association.
Another prospect, Saint Louis two-way phenom Haskell Garrett, is also believed to have enrolled at Bishop Gorman. Garrett, a 6-foot-4, 240-pound freshman, was a standout on the Crusaders intermediate team last fall. Freshmen are not permitted to play varsity football in the ILH. Garrett’s move wouldn’t be a shocker. Former Saint Louis linebacker Nela Otukolo played at Bishop Gorman last season as a junior.
Spartans girls have eye on travel
Maryknoll girls basketball coach Chico Furtado has helped the program move into a higher echelon in his two seasons at the helm.
Now he’s planning an off-island trip for his Lady Spartans next season. That may include a voyage to the Lahainaluna Invitational, where Lunas coach Todd Rickard has extended an invite. It may also involve Bishop Gorman.
"We may go to the tournament there. We were invited last year, but we had a (scheduling) conflict with the ‘Iolani Classic," Furtado said.
In the meantime, the longtime coach will host a girls basketball camp at Maryknoll, April 28-30.
"It’s going to be 12 hours of intense instruction. It’s not for beginners," he said.
Former Kalaheo All-State player of the year Brandy Richardson, now head coach at Radford, will be part of the camp staff. The cost is $80. For more information, call 722-6245.
