The No. 3-ranked University of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine sand volleyball team swept No. 6 UCLA and San Francisco by 5-0 scores at Piper Park in Larskpur, Calif., on Thursday.
Against UCLA, Hawaii (9-2) won in straight sets on three of five courts. UH’s top pair of Brittany Tiegs and Karissa Cook defeated the Bruins’ Jessyka Ngauamo and Kamila Tan 21-15, 21-9 to complete the shutout.
In the second match, the Wahine won in straight sets in all five courts. The pair of Sarah Mendoza and Olivia Urban made their debut as a tandem at the No. 5 spot and won easily over Emily Reed and Inbar Vinarsky, 21-8, 21-15.
UH will play Stanford, UCLA and Santa Clara in dual matches on the Stanford campus on Saturday. The teams will then compete in a pairs tournament on Sunday.

Rainbows fail to qualify
University of Hawaii diver Amund Gismervik and swimmer Victor Goicoechea failed to qualify for the finals on the first day of the NCAA National Swimming & Diving Championships in Austin, Texas.
Gismervik finished 24th in 1-meter diving. He had a six-dive total of 310.65.
Goicoechea, competing in his first of three events, finished 45th in the 500 free prelims.
Gismervik and Goicoechea, along with teammate Paulo de Paula will compete Friday in the 3-meter dive, 200 freestyle, and 100 breastroke competitions, respectively.
Water polo keeper honored
University of Hawaii goalkeeper Amy Carlson earned Big West Women’s Water Polo Player of the Week honors after her stellar play in goal last weekend.
It is the first career Big West honor for the senior from Bellevue, Wash.
Carlson was instrumental in UH’s success last weekend, averaging 11.0 saves in three matches. She had 11 saves in a 9-8 overtime win over Long Beach State in the Big West opener, a career-high 14 saves against Indiana in a 9-5 win and eight saves in a 14-6 loss to top-ranked USC in three quarters of action.
UH (13-6, 1-0 Big West) plays a conference match against No. 6 UC Irvine on Friday. The Rainbow Wahine will then host No. 2 UCLA on Saturday. Both matches start at 6 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
