Viloria highlights good day for local fighters
Brian Viloria, a four-time world champion with four different organizations, improved to 33-4 with a unanimous decision victory over Juan Herrera in a 112-pound bout on Saturday at the Texas Station Casino in Las Vegas.
The three judges scored the 10-round bout 98-92, 98-92 and 97-93 in favor of Viloria. The victory sets up a fight on May 31 on the Top Rank card in Macau, China. His opponent hasn’t been determined.
>> Brothers Brenson and Bryson Hansen, formerly of Kailua, won mixed martial arts fights on the preliminary card of Saturday’s “World Series of Fighting 9” card at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Bryson Hansen (7-1) needed just 46 seconds to beat Sean Cantor (1-1) by TKO in his WSOF debut at 135 pounds. Brenson Hansen (6-2) picked up a unanimous decision against Boostayre Nefarios (2-2), winning by scores of 30-27, 30-27 and 29-28.
>> Maui’s Kendall Grove suffered a second-round knockout loss to Brett Cooper in a middleweight tournament bout at “Bellator 114” on Friday at the Maverick Center in West Valley, Utah. Cooper (20-9) ended the fight with a right hand followed up by a series of strikes to Grove (19-14) that forced the referee to stop it at 3:33.
UH sand volleyball team wins 3 matches
The third-ranked Hawaii sand volleyball team swept three dual matches Saturday at the Stanford (Calif.) Invitational. The Rainbow Wahine (12-2) defeated host Stanford, Santa Clara and No. 6 UCLA by identical 5-0 scores.
Against Stanford, Hawaii did not drop a set and did not allow more than 16 points in any single game. The most points allowed in any one set against Santa Clara came at No. 1 in the 21-12, 21-17 victory by Brittany Tiegs and Karissa Cook over Nikki Hess and Sabrina Clayton. Hawaii needed three-set victories at Nos. 1, 4 and 5 to pull out the second sweep of UCLA in three days.
No. 2 UCLA stops No. 10 Hawaii water polo
The second-ranked UCLA water polo team edged No. 10 Hawaii 5-4 on Saturday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex. UCLA (20-2) stopped two shots by Hawaii in the final minute.
Paula Chillida Esforzado had three goals for Hawaii (13-8).
Haitsuka scores in rugby loss
Kamehameha Schools alum Pono Haitsuka scored the United States’ first try in a 15-10 loss to Scotland at the Cathay Pacific HSBC Hong Kong Sevens rugby tournament in Hong Kong on Saturday. The U.S. concludes first-round play against New Zealand on Sunday.
