HPU’s Nakasato, Garcia win weekly honors
Junior left fielder Derek Nakasato was named co-player of the week and teammate Joshua Garcia earned pitcher of the week honors after helping Hawaii Pacific go 5-3 on the road last week.
Nakasato, a Saint Louis School product, hit .515 (17-for-33) with six extra-base hits, seven runs scored and eight RBIs. He had a hit in all eight games, including five multi-hit performances.
Nakasato had six RBIs in the four-game series against Academy of Art and had three doubles and two RBIs in Sunday’s 7-0 victory over Holy Names in the series final.
He ranks fifth in the PacWest with 25 RBIs. Nakasato shared the weekly honor with Point Loma’s Tyler Nordgren.
Garcia, also a Saint Louis alumnus, threw 12 shutout innings in Sunday’s 1-0, 13-inning win in the first game of a doubleheader at Holy Names.
Garcia (2-1) struck out a school-record 16 batters, allowing two hits and retiring 28 batters in a row between the first and 10th innings, and he threw just 146 pitches.
For the week, Garcia pitched 19 innings, with three earned runs on nine hits. In a no-decision against Academy of Art, he had five strikeouts over seven innings. He is third in the PacWest in innings pitched (59 2/3) and fourth in strikeouts (55).

Chaminade swept at Dixie State
The road continued to hit back hard for Chaminade, which dropped Monday’s conference doubleheader at Dixie State, 14-1 and 11-0, both in five innings by the 8-run mercy rule.
The losses extended the Silverswords’ losing streak to 13, the past eight to open a 12-day road trip. The teams play another doubleheader Tuesday in St. George, Utah, before Chaminade heads to the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif., which starts Friday.
The Silverswords (7-21, 6-18 PacWest) avoided being shut out by the Red Storm (29-8, 17-5) when they scored an unearned run in the top of the third in the first game. Down 11-0, Elia Lizarraga’s single drove in Sierra Mendiola for Chaminade’s lone run at Karl Brooks Field.
