Man indicted after officer dragged by car
An Oahu grand jury Tuesday indicted a 31-year-old Ewa Beach man on charges he dragged a plainclothes officer 150 feet while fighting for control of a stolen car speeding away from a McCully gas station last week.
Darryl Higgins was indicted on charges of first-degree attempted assault, first-degree assault on a law enforcement officerand auto theft. His bail was set at $250,000.
Three plainclothes officers tried to arrest the suspect March 25 after trailing a suspected stolen car to a gas station near Washington Middle School, police said. The car sped off, and one of the officers was dragged onto Punahou Street while the officer and the suspect fought for the car’s gear shift. The suspect’s car hit a truck on Punahou Street and was rammed by a van.
The car the suspect was driving had been stolen a day earlier, police said.
Fugitive from Alaska is nabbed on Maui
ANCHORAGE, Alaska » Anchorage police say a 32-year-old man is under arrest after he broke out of his ankle monitor and fled to Hawaii.
KTUU reported Monday that Joshua Leigh cut the monitor off at a hardware store and left the state on a flight to Maui. A monitoring agency told police that the monitor was last reported at a hardware store.
A warrant was issued Saturday for Leigh, who was awaiting trial on felony charges.
Police obtained an extraditable warrant, and Leigh was stopped by Maui police after the plane landed.
Leigh was returned to Anchorage. He’s charged with violating conditions of his release and criminal mischief. Online court records don’t list a lawyer for Leigh in this case.
