Spring break is over, and savvy parents are already planning ahead, investigating summer programs and activities that best suit their children’s interests and their families’ needs. The following assortment samples programs offered on Oahu for the school break. Some offer discounts for members; prices listed are for nonmembers.

Summer 2014 SNAP (Sensational Nature Adventure Program), 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 2 through Aug. 15, with optional extended care until 5 p.m. The 11 one-week sessions include nature activities, forest hikes, stream investigations, crafts, insect safaris, beach explorations and field trips. For ages 6 to 11. Cost is $280 to $350 per week. Registration deadline is two weeks prior to the start of each session.

» Animation: Learn principles and techniques using industry-standard cameras and editing software, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 24-28.
» Basic Reel: Learn about storytelling, storyboarding, script-writing, lighting, audio, editing and how to use a professional camera while working in small teams to produce a short video, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 22-26.

» Pacific Music Institute: Intensive music program, July 11-20 at UH-Manoa’s Music Department for serious music students entering grades 8 through 12 (including graduating seniors). Must have at least two years of instrumental experience. Students participate in ensembles including concert band, string orchestra, chamber music, jazz band and symphony orchestra (culminating with community concerts); learn music theory; and engage in musicianship-building activities. Teens 4 Animals Summer Experience is a two-week program for grades 8 through 12, offering service-learning and volunteer hours. Session 1 runs 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 4-17; Session 2 is 1 to 5 p.m. June 18 to July 1. Participants learn about animal training, communication, cruelty, pet adoptions, overpopulation and more. Cost: $195.

» Young Artists Summer Program: Classes in printmaking, cartooning, ceramics, drawing and painting, mixed media and exploring art offered Tuesdays through Fridays for kindergarten through grade 12. Classes at 8 and 10:15 a.m. and 1 p.m. Cost: $275 per class.
» Summer Art Camp: 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. for grades 1 to 3. This camp will also be held at Spalding House (2411 Makiki Heights Drive) from 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. Cost: $825.
» Summer Art Intensive: 8 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. for grades 4 through 12. Students create their own all-day program by selecting three classes. Cost: $795.

» Camp Wildlife Koa features enrichment/encounter activities, multimedia presentations, lessons about animal endangerment and starting a conservation project for ages 9 to 11. Cost: $285 per week

» Weekday camps May 30 through July 31 for students who have completed kindergarten through grade 6, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. (programs begin 8 a.m., half-day option available until 2:30 p.m.) at the following sites: Mililani Tech Park, Voyager Public Charter School at 2428 Wilder Ave. and Ben Parker, Enchanted Lake, Hahaione, Keoneula, Liholiho, Waikele and Waimalu elementary schools. Activities include swimming, sailing, kayaking, Camp Timberline overnighter, singing, dancing, excursions and science activities. Cost is $145 to $170 per week, or $1,250 for entire summer. » Junior Lifeguard Program: Weekly sessions for ages 13 to 17, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 2 through July 25 on a rotating basis at Ala Moana, Kalama, Ehukai and Makaha beach parks. Participants learn about water safety, first aid and surf rescue techniques through physical and ocean skills training and competition. Bring lunch. Cost: $100 per week. Register by May 19. Language immersion classes for infants and keiki up to age 9 in Mandarin, Japanese, Spanish and Korean. Sessions held two or three times a week, May 31 through Aug. 13; times depend on age of child and language of interest. Intensive programs in Mandarin and English as a Second Language also offered. Language and ESL programs are held at 725 Kapiolani Blvd., Suite C-106; toddler and children’s Chinese classes at 3636 Kilauea Ave. in Kaimuki. Cost is $200 to $399. » Flight School for Girls: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 10-12. Repeats July 8-10.
» Aviation Adventure: Coed residential camp July 15-17 for ages 13 to 17. Covers history of Ford Island and Pearl Harbor; science, technology, engineering and math concepts of aviation; and experiences in the hangars and aboard the Battleship Missouri Memorial. Cost for the three-day, two-night program is $300, which includes overnight accommodations aboard the Missouri. Repeats July 22-24 and 29-31.

Summer Fun Days 2014, 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 2 through July 31, or half-day option until 2 p.m. Includes academics, sports and fitness activities, arts and crafts, games, cooking, pool time (with Leahi Swim School) and field trips. For keiki who have completed kindergarten through grade 6. Cost: $975 if registered by May 2 or $1,150 by May 16. Half-day program is $750, with weekly ($125 to $150) and daily ($35 to $40) options available.

» Summer camp (in partnership with Kama‘aina Kids): Weekly programs for kindergarten through grade 6, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 2 through July 25 (except weeks of June 9 and 30); Kama‘aina Kids provides transportation; keiki may be dropped off from 6 to 9 a.m. and picked up from 3 to 6 p.m. Participants have encounters with dolphins, sharks and rays while learning about the ocean’s ecosystem, its inhabitants and conservation efforts. » Internships and volunteer programs: Must be 18 or older and devote eight to 12 hours a month, assisting with the touch pool, caring for injured seabirds or becoming a park docent. Happy Healthy Circus Camp for ages 6 to 12, 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 23 through July 25, drop-off from 8:30 a.m. Weekly activities include aerial yoga and dance, archery, tumbling, hooping, juggling, singing, acting and an obstacle course, with nutrition workshops, massage, Hawaiian arts and crafts, storytelling and more. Learn fundamentals through a mixture of competition and instruction, with a written evaluation by a camp coach and highlight tapes. Cost: $250 per camp or $400 for both.
