Hawaii water polo team holds off UCSB
Amy Carlson made two saves from point-blank range in the game’s closing seconds to help the No. 9 Hawaii water polo team beat No. 15 UC Santa Barbara 8-7 in a Big West match on Saturday in Santa Barbara, Calif.
Carlson finished with six saves. Caity Lopes da Silva, Paula Chillida Esforzado and Claire Nixon each scored a pair of goals for Hawaii (14-9, 2-2).
Baxter takes SUP sprint in Brazil
Connor Baxter beat Kai Lenny in a sprint to the finish Saturday in the Alagoas Pro World Series standup paddling event in Brazil.
After a tight race, Baxter just managed to hold off fellow Maui boy Lenny in a sprint up the beach at Praia do Frances. Zane Schweitzer (fourth), Kody Kerbox (sixth) and Mo Freitas (eighth) were the other Hawaii SUP competitors.
The long-distance race takes place Sunday.
HPU baseball team sweeps Hilo
The Hawaii Pacific baseball team took both games of a doubleheader against Hawaii Hilo, winning 4-3 and 5-4 on Saturday at Hans L’Orange Park.
In game one, HPU scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally past Hilo. In game two, Derek Nakasato scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. HPU is 23-13 and Hilo is 10-25.
HPU, Chaminade lose at tourney
The Hawaii Pacific and Chaminade softball teams lost both of their two games at Saturday’s Mizuno Tournament of Champions in Turlock, Calif.
Hawaii Pacific (15-19) lost 3-0 to No. 20 UC San Diego and 5-4 to Cal State San Bernardino. Chaminade (7-28) lost 9-1 to Cal State San Bernardino and 1-0 to Cal State Monterey Bay.
Wendt and McGill at Honolulu QB Club
David Maafu Wendt and Kelly McGill will speak at Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon. Wendt is the president of several local rugby organizations — Hawaii Youth Rugby, Hawaii Rugby Union, and Hawaii Adult Rugby Association. McGill is a player and coach for the USA Tomahawks National Team. He is also a former University of Hawaii offensive lineman.
The luncheon, which costs $15, is held at the Maple Garden Restaurant and starts at 11:30 a.m.
