Mokulele Airlines, which was previously restricted from offering nonstop daily service between Honolulu and Kahului due to its code-share agreement with go!, will fly up to seven one-way flights per day between the cities beginning Friday.
An introductory price of $49 one way will be offered for two-thirds of the seats beginning Tuesday. To get the promotional fare, tickets must be purchased by April 15 for travel completed by May 8. The special fare is also good for the two Honolulu-Kahului flights that are now available as well as the five additional ones that will be added later this week.
"We couldn’t really offer that route before because of a code-share agreement with go! that go! flies that route," Mokulele Chief Operating Office Dave Berry said Monday. "In a code-share agreement (where passengers can purchase tickets on either carrier’s website), we couldn’t fly the same routes that go! does."
Go! shut down March 31 after nearly eight years of operation in the islands.
Mokulele had offered one Honolulu-Kahului flight before, but it was part of a route that also included Kamuela on Hawaii island as either the beginning or ending stop. Mokulele added another Honolulu-Kahului flight after go! announced its shutdown but before that carrier ceased operations. Mokulele is adding up to five more flights, and beginning Friday will offer six nonstop flights from Honolulu to Kahului and seven nonstop flights from Kahului to Honolulu.
The airline, which has nine nine-seat Cessna Grand Caravans in its fleet, said Monday it plans to purchase two to three more Caravans to meet an expanded summer schedule. Cy Shimamoto, director of planning for Mokulele, also said that the number of no-shows on Mokulele flights due to confusion with go!’s shutdown has subsided.
