Architects to lead walking tour
Saturday’s Waikiki Walking Tour, hosted by the American Institute of Architects Honolulu Chapter, will take participants through architecturally significant historic buildings and areas in the world-famous locale.
The free two-hour tour covers about a mile, so comfortable shoes, sunscreen, hats, water and snacks are recommended.
The walk is part of AIA’s Architecture Month, which involves a series of events focusing on the importance of "the built environment." The organization will hold a tour of downtown design firms April 25.
The Waikiki tours will be offered from 8:30 a.m. to noon, with the last tour leaving at 10 a.m.. Online registration is required at www.aiahonolulu.org.
Diabetes is focus of event
Endocrinologists, diabetes educators, dietitians, pharmacists and personal trainers will offer one-on-one advice and information about the latest in diabetes care and management Saturday at the Hawai‘i Convention Center. The all-day event is sponsored by Taking Control of Your Diabetes, an organization devoted to promoting diabetes education.
The group says diabetes affects more than 110,000 people in Hawaii. Dr. Steven Edelman, a California endocrinologist and the founder of Taking Control of Your Diabetes, was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 15 and told that blindness, kidney failure and amputations were likely in his future — as well as an early death. Edelman is now 58.
The event will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The early registration fee is $20 per person ($15 per person for groups of two or more) through Wednesday. Same-day registration, starting at 7:30 a.m., is $25. Financial assistance is available. For more information, visit www.tcoyd.org or call 800-998-2693.
