Leak in gas pipe forces closing of highway
Police reopened Farrington Highway on Tuesday afternoon after gas crews repaired a break in a 4-inch line.
The highway was closed for about five hours in both directions from Waipahu Depot Road to Pupupuhi Street near Honowai Neighborhood Park. Fire officials reported the leak was repaired at about 1:15 p.m.
Firefighters heard the gas leak coming from the line on the west side of Waipahu Stream while they were recalled to fight a rubbish fire under the stream bridge near Anini Place and Farrington Highway, said Fire Inspector David Jenkins. It was extinguished at 7:52 a.m.
The rubbish fire was initially reported at 6:45 a.m. under the bridge on the west side of the stream.
The fires were apparently not connected to the gas leak.
Hawaii Gas Co. workers were called to repair the break.
All traffic was rerouted around the bridge at 9 a.m., and the highway was reopened at about 2 p.m.

A Fire Department hazardous materials team determined that ammonia, used as a refrigerant, was leaking due to a faulty valve or valve left open at Unicold Corp., 3140 Ualena St., said David Jenkins, fire inspector and spokesman for the Honolulu Fire Department.
When the leak was reported at about 1:20 p.m., police closed Ualena and Koapaka streets. Fire officials reported at about 1:50 p.m. that they had contained the leak. The streets were reopened at about 2:15 p.m.
