Four Native Hawaiian artists are recipients of this year’s Maoli Arts Month, or MAMo, awards, and an exhibit of their works opens May 2 at Bishop Museum.
Paulette Kahalepuna, Meleanna Aluli Meyer, Kauka De Silva and Duncan Ka‘ohuoka‘ala Seto are lauded for not only mastery of their art forms, but for being educators who share their knowledge.
Kahalepuna is a featherwork master; Meyer is a visual artist, writer and filmmaker; De Silva is a ceramist and sculptor who teaches at Kapiolani Community College; and Seto draws, paints and weaves.
"MAMo Awards 2014: He Kumu Kukui" runs May 2 to July 21. A free awards presentation and opening reception will take place 6 p.m. May 1.
A Hawaiian arts market at the museum will take place 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 24 and 25, featuring native artists, workshops and family activities; admission will be discounted.
