Hawaii goes 2-1 in sand tournament
Third-ranked Hawaii won two dual matches by sweeps and was swept in another in Saturday’s AVCA Beach Collegiate Challenge in Hermosa Beach, Calif.
The Rainbow Wahine defeated both Cal State Bakersfield and Arizona 5-0, but then saw their nine-match winning streak snapped in a loss to second-ranked Pepperdine for the second time this season. In the loss to the Waves, Hawaii’s Nos. 1 and 4 pairs went three, with No. 1 Karissa Cook-Brittany Tiegs falling to Kelley Larsen-Kellie Woolever 21-14, 17-21, 15-12; and No. 4 London Chow-Tayler Higgins losing to Emily Cook-Katie Messing 21-14, 17-21, 16-14.
It was just the third time that Cook/Tiegs lost in 30 matches. Hawaii improved to 15-3.
Pepperdine finished 3-0, Cal State Bakerfield 1-2 and Arizona 0-3. On the other side of the bracket, No. 1 USC went 3-0, Loyola Marymount 2-1, No. 6 UCLA 1-2 and Santa Clara 0-3.
The tournament continues Sunday with pairs bracket play.
Sullivan speaks at Quarterback Club
Jack Sullivan, past president of the Honolulu Quarterback Club, will discuss the 194th birthday celebration of Alexander Joy Cartwright, the inventor of modern-day baseball, at Monday’s club meeting. Baseball buffs meet on April 17 every year at his gravesite at Oahu Cemetery to mark Cartwright’s birthday and talk baseball in his honor.
The public is welcome to attend the luncheon at Maple Garden restaurant, at 909 Isenberg Street (across Old Stadium Park). Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. and the program begins at noon. The cost is $15 per person for both members and guests.
Hawaii Pacific splits pair with Azusa
Kevin Lenik scored on Lanan Rice-Kashima’s single in the bottom of the ninth inning to help Hawaii Pacific edge Azusa Pacific 6-5 in the first game of a Pacific West Conference doubleheader Saturday at Hans L’Orange Park.
Asuza Pacific (21-13, 14-8) took the second game 7-3 to salvage the split. HPU fell to 26-14, 16-12 in the conference.
HPU, Hawaii Hilo halve doubleheader
Hawaii Pacific and Hawaii Hilo split a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader Saturday in Hilo.
The Vulcans (19-17, 12-11) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take the first game 3-2.
Charisse Tanabe blasted two homers and Kayla Sanchez and Nicole Vienna added home runs of their own as Hawaii Pacific (16-21, 14-12) came back to take the second game, 9-1.
30th Hawaiian Classic ice hockey Sunday
Sixteen teams representing five U.S. states and two foreign countries take to the ice starting Sunday morning in the 30th Hawaiian Classic ice hockey tournament at the Ice Palace.
Squads from Hawaii, Nevada, Arizona, Alaska, California, Germany and Canada are entered. Pool play begins at 7:30 a.m. Sunday and runs through Tuesday, with the final on Wednesday.
