UH men’s tennis team shares BWC title
The University of Hawaii men’s tennis team edged UC Irvine 4-3 to remain undefeated and earn a share of the Big West Conference championship on Friday at Anteater Tennis Stadium in Irvine, Calif.
UC Irvine (11-16, 1-4 BWC) swept the three doubles matches, but Hawaii (7-11, 4-0 BWC) earned victories in the No. 2, 3 and 6 singles matches. The deciding match played out on the No. 1 singles court, where UH’s Jonathan Brooklyn beat Ryan Cheung 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.
The ‘Bows are tied with UC Santa Barbara atop the Big West standings and the No. 1 seed is to be determined.
HPU men in PacWest title match in tennis
The undefeated Hawaii Pacific men’s tennis team advanced to the Pacific West Conference championship with a 5-0 win over Brigham Young-Hawaii on Friday in Surprise, Ariz.
The Sea Warriors (19-0) swept doubles play to start the match and earned two wins in singles. HPU, the defending PacWest champion, will face Azusa Pacific on Saturday for the title. The Seasiders (12-6) will play Point Loma today for third place.
» In the women’s semifinal matches, No. 2 HPU(17-6) defeated Azusa Pacific 5-2 on Friday to advance to the PacWest championship against No. 1 BYU-Hawaii. The Seasiders (25-0)beat Academy of Art 5-2 to create a rematch of last year’s championship.
UHH golfers lead PacWest championship
The Hawaii Hilo men’s golf team holds an 11-stroke lead in the PacWest championship with a score of 586 at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo, Calif. The winner earns an automatic berth into the NCAADivision II Championship.
Dixie State trails at 597, followed by Dominican at 600. HPUis in fifth place, followed by Chaminade and BYU-Hawaii. Dominican’s Drew Nelson holds the individual lead with a score of 142 (73-69) after two rounds. The tournament ends Saturday.
Azusa Pacific edges Hilo in baseball
Josh Staumont struck out eight to lift the Azusa Pacific baseball team over Hawaii Hilo 5-3 on Friday in Hilo.
Joe Huthsing went 4-for-4 to help the Cougars (24-14, 17-9 PWC). Hawaii Hilo (10-29, 8-20 PWC) held a 2-1 lead after six innings, but a three-run rally in the top of the seventh secured the win for Azusa Pacific.
