Hawaii duo wins Big West Challenge
Hawaii sand volleyball players Karissa Cook and Brittany Tiegs beat Tyler Jackson and Janisa Johnson of Long Beach State 21-12, 21-10 to take the A bracket at Saturday’s Big West Challenge in Huntington Beach, Calif.
The Hawaii duos of Ali Longo and Ginger Long and London Chow and Olivia Urban won their semifinal matches in the B bracket, but opted not to play each other in the final. UH’s Karlee Riggs and Mikayla Tucker lost in the C final.
BYUH wins eighth straight PacWest title
The Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s tennis team beat Hawaii Pacific 5-3 for its eighth consecutive Pacific West Conference championship Saturday in Surprise, Ariz.
Nannan Zhang of BYUH (26-0) was named the tournament MVP. She beat Karen Ramirez 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles and teamed with Min Liu to win 8-3 at No. 1 doubles over Ramirez and Celina Goetti. Sasha Ulbrichtova beat Vivian Hansen 1-6, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 5 singles to clinch the title for the Seasiders.
» The HPU men won their second straight PacWest championship with a 5-0 win over Azusa Pacific. Petr Michnev of HPU (20-0) was named the tournament MVP. The Sea Warriors won all three doubles matches and got singles wins from Mattis Wetzel and Clemens Graute.
Vulcans win PacWest golf championship
Four Hawaii Hilo golfers finished in the top 10 to help the Vulcans win the Pacific West Conference men’s championship on Saturday at Vallejo, Calif.
Hilo finished with a three-round total of 887, 20 shots better than runner-up Dixie State. Hilo’s Dalen Yamauchi shot a 1-under 71 to finish third at 219. Kyeton Littel (77, 221) was fifth, Chris Shimomura (74, 222) placed sixth and Corey Kozuma (79, 225) tied for ninth. Yamauchi, Littel and Shimomura earned first-team honors and Kozuma was on the second team.
BYUH placed sixth (940), Chaminade was seventh (941), and Hawaii Pacific was eighth (953). Dominican’s Pomi Milton (75, 218) won a playoff for the individual title. Milton graduated from Hanalani Schools.
Chaminade, HPU split in softball
Ashley Phelps went 3-for-4 to help Chaminade beat host Hawaii Pacific 5-1 in the first game of a Pacific West Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday.
Kristen Caskey struck out seven to help HPU win the second game 5-1. Keila Elderts was 3-for-4 for HPU (17-22, 15-13). Phelps was 2-for-2 for the Silverswords (9-30, 7-21).
» Cal Baptist swept Brigham Young-Hawaii 3-0 and 11-1 in a PacWest doubleheader in Riverside, Calif. The No. 20 Lancers are 37-11, 21-5. The Seasiders are 10-20, 6-17.
Murray, Barros at Quarterback Club
Steve Murray and Romolo Barros will speak at Monday’s Honolulu Quarterback Club luncheon at Maple Garden restaurant.
Murray is MidWeek’s associate editor and co-host of 1420Golf on KKEA, 1420-AM.
Barros is founder of the Hawaii Triple Crown of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, a three-series tourney that starts in May. Lunch is $15 and starts at 11:30 a.m.
