The Kamehameha boys and Punahou girls brought the most noise at the Punahou Relays on Saturday at Alexander Field.

The Warriors claimed five relay races and the Buffanblu girls took four. No other school won more than two.

Kamehameha made the difference at the tape in two races, taking the 4×200-meter relay by 1.21 seconds over Radford and by a half-second over Punahou in the 4×180 shuttle hurdles. Kamehameha’s boys won the 4×100, the distance medley and 4×110 shuttle hurdles by much wider margins.

The only other boys teams to claim victory were Punahou in the 4×800 and 1600 sprint medley and Mid-Pacific in the 4×400.

Kamehameha was not higher than third in any of those contests.

Punahou’s girls won the 4×800, 4×180 shuttle hurdles, distance medley and 4×100 shuttle hurdles. They also helped the school claim the 6×66.5-meter mixed power relay over Campbell.

Campbell’s girls are the reigning state champs in the 4×100, but lost to Radford by 0.17 seconds on Saturday. The Sabers made up for it with wins in the 4×400 and 4×200, though. Campbell’s time of 3:59.68 in the 4×400 broke the event record and was faster than Punahou’s winning time of 4:01.13 in last year’s state meet.

Pearl City’s girls took the 1,600 sprint medley.

Punahou’s Sammy Marumoto was a double winner, rising to 12 feet, 7 inches in the pole vault for the event record and covering 16-08 in the long jump. Kamehameha-Maui’s Kauanoe Vanderpeol swept the boys discus and shot put.

Chad Miyamoto repeated in the signature event, winning the Hawaii’s Fastest Human with a time of 11.12 seconds to beat DJ Iwamoto’s 11.19 and Travis Rosenow’s 11.25. It is Miyamoto’s sixth time winning the event, which is not open to high schoolers.

Founded in 1946, the Punahou Relays are Hawaii’s longest-running prep track event.

The ILH championships are Saturday at Kamehameha, with the OIA championships the following week at Mililani. The state meet is May 9-10 at Kamehameha.
