Not content with never losing a match as a high schooler, Mililani senior Alyssa Tobita set her sights on not losing a game.

Tobita beat Kalani’s Hina Goldsmith 6-0, 6-0 to win her fourth OIA girls individual tennis championship on Saturday at Central Oahu Regional Park.

Tobita swept all of her opponents 6-0, 6-0 in the tournament, completing a perfect run for a girl who has never lost a match in her high school career.

"It was a goal of mine," Tobita said. "I set goals before I come out to play and that was one of the ones I was aiming for, so I am really proud of myself. The scores didn’t really show how tough the matches really were."

The Oregon commit cruised through her final against Goldsmith, showing off a powerful forehand that she lacked early in her career and forcing the Falcon to return high balls into the wind before putting them away. Tobita beat Goldsmith 6-0, 6-1 in last year’s final and has given up only four games in four OIA championship matches.

Tobita matched former Mililani standout Erin Hoe (1997-2000) with her fourth straight OIA title. She counts Hoe as a friend, and will be trying to match another one of her marks in two weeks at the state tournament on Maui. Hoe went through her entire high school career unbeaten and Tobita is five wins away from being able to say the same thing.

"I think both of them are the same," Mililani coach Jason Agsalda said. "They are both relentless, they both have tenacity in their game and they both have that fighting spirit. They are both winners."

Tobita can shrug off her OIA accomplishment, but states would be a whole different matter. Players in that draw are not as likely to see Tobita across from the net and be intimidated since everyone is familiar with each other from junior tournaments.

"There is a lot of pressure; everybody is talking to me about the fourth," Tobita said. "I don’t want them to mention it because I don’t want to play and regret how I move my feet or regret how I practiced beforehand. This is it, this is the moment I have been practicing for and I really hope that I pull it off."

Mililani sophomore Sage Leaman is halfway to matching Tobita’s OIA accomplishment, beating Darrell Huang of Kalani 6-0, 6-3 to repeat as the boys individual champion.

Huang tested Leaman halfway through the second set, forcing him to yell at himself more than once, but the young Trojan fought him off with the help of his teammates on the next court.

Leaman looked over to watch fellow Trojans Jace Akagi-Okuma and Davin Lee beating Kalani’s Calvin Lee and Soohan Bong 6-3, 7-6 (5) for the OIA boys doubles title. After Leaman closed out Huang, Leaman stayed on the court to cheer each shot by his teammates until the clincher, when he let out the loudest whoop. He was a little too busy and too far away to catch the girls doubles final, where Mililani’s Haley Fujimori and Alyssa Nakasato beat Kristin Mack and Kaycee Oyama 6-4, 6-0 for that title.

"I just enjoy playing high school tennis," Leaman said. "I like the atmosphere, I like playing next to my teammates. I am a fan, too. I like to watch, and seeing them sometimes can keep my mind off my match and helps me loosen up. I really had to dig deep this year."

Leaman is the OIA’s first repeat champion since Jared Spiker did it for Kalani in 2009 and ’10. Spiker parlayed those titles into state championships each year, but Leaman lost to eventual champion Kawika Lam of Punahou last year 6-2, 6-1 to miss out on the semifinals. That remains his only blemish.

"I know that probably drives him, for sure," Agsalda said. "He is just a player who always wants to perform at a high level and always wants to succeed and remembers what happened last year and uses that as motivation."
