Fuel spill discovered in harbor
The Coast Guard responded to a possible diesel spill in the Ala Wai Small Boat Harbor on Monday morning.
The National Response Center notified the Coast Guard at 6:30 a.m. Monday.
The sheen was believed to be diesel fuel or some other petroleum product, the Coast Guard said.
Coast Guard spokesman Petty Officer Stephen Woodbury said the pollutant was likely marine diesel from a boat.
The Pacific Environmental Corp. was contracted to clean up the spill.
PENCO is using absorbent pads and was expected to work until 4 or 5 p.m., and was to report back to the Coast Guard. The area of the spill was roughly 200 by 30 feet.
The Coast Guard did not have an estimate of the spill amount or the source of the pollution.
An unreported spill could bring federal penalties, depending on the severity of the incident.

Pair wanted in shoplifting, assault incident
Hawaii County police are looking for two people captured on surveillance video in connection with an incident that occurred outside of a department store in Hilo last week.
A woman was seen taking an item from the store and walking out without paying at 12:09 p.m. Friday at a mall on Puainako Street, police said.
Store employees went to confront the woman when a man outside the store attempted to escort them inside. He threw one of the workers to the ground, causing head and rib injuries, police said in a news release.
The woman and man then fled on foot in the direction of Makaala Street.
Anyone with information about the suspects is asked to call the Police Department’s non-emergency line, 935-3311.
