Mason, Mueller lead Mid-Pacific Open
Nick Mason and Jesse Mueller both fired 4-under-par 68s to share the first-round lead of the Mid-Pacific Open in Lanikai on Thursday.
After Mason, the 2012 champion, carded four birdies to take the clubhouse lead, Mueller, the 2009 Pearl Open champ, posted four birdies of his own on the front side before coming home with two more birdies and two bogeys.
Punahou’s PJ Samiere is a stroke back after posting a 69 and Eric Meichtry (70) is alone in fourth.
Dean Wilson, Stan Souza, Alex Ching, 1995 champ Brandan Kop and amateur Carl Ho are tied for fifth at 71.
Casey Nakama, who won the title in 1996, and Kevin Hayashi both shot 72. Defending champ TJ Kua shot a 74.
Sea Warriors sweep Seasiders
Hawaii Pacific blanked Brigham Young-Hawaii twice to sweep a PacWest softball doubleheader in Kaneohe on Thursday.
The Sea Warriors took the first game 2-0 behind Chandelle Dacosin, who tossed a one-hitter over seven innings.
Dorian Acierto blasted a grand slam in the first inning of the second game and Kristen Caskey scattered seven hits to post a complete game shutout of her own as Hawaii Pacific (19-22, 17-13 PacWest) completed the sweep, 6-0.
BYUH fell to 10-26 and 6-24.
