Hawaii men’s tennis advances to final
The top-seeded University of Hawaii men’s tennis team edged No. 4 UC Davis 4-3 in the semifinal of the Big West Men’s Tennis Championship on Friday at Indian Wells, Calif.
With the match tied at 3, the tiebreaker came down to the singles match with Hawaii’s Chas Okamoto and UC Davis’ Kyle Miller. Miller took the first set 6-3, but Okamoto rallied in the next two sets, 6-2 and 7-5, to lift the Warriors into the championship. Hawaii will face No. 2 Cal Poly on Saturday for the conference title.
Mason leads field at Mid-Pacific Open
Nick Mason shot a second-round 72 for a one-stroke lead at the Mid-Pacific Open on Friday at Mid-Pacific Country Club. Mason remains 4 under par overall and is followed by Dean Wilson, Eric Meichtry and Jesse Mueller at 141.
Carl Ho clinched the senior amateur division at 149, while Casey Nakama and Stan Souza remain tied for first place in the senior professional contest. Nakama and Souza will play off on Saturday during the tournament’s third round. The professional and championship flights will tee off on Saturday at 6:50 a.m. from the first and 10th tees.
BYUH and UHH split softball doubleheader
BYU-Hawaii and Hawaii Hilo split a PacificWest Conference softball doubleheader on Friday in Laie. The Vulcans won the opener 5-2 and the Seasiders the nightcap 1-0.
In the first game, Hawaii Hilo scored three runs in the first three innings and held on.
Gabby Hawkins pitched a shutout in the second game. A Rebecca Mawson double brought home Whitney Gustafson in the fourth inning for the only run, giving the Seasiders (11-27 overall, 7-25 PacificWest Conference) their first win over the Vulcans (20-18, 12-11) since 2009.
