A 32-year-old Hilo man, who led police on a chase in January 2013 after shooting two officers, faces life without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced June 20.
A Hilo Circuit Court jury found Keaka Martin guilty Thursday of first-degree attempted murder in the shooting of Officer Joshua Gouveia, and first-degree assault for shooting Officer Garrett Hatada, as well as several firearms charges.
It was the first shooting of police officers in Hawaii County since 1997.
"We’re pleased with their verdict," Deputy Prosecutor Darien Nagata said Thursday.
The verdict ended a jury trial that began in February.
On the night of Jan. 2, 2013, Gouveia and Hatada responded to calls of gunshots being fired near the Wailoa River in Hilo.
They discovered Martin hiding under a van in the parking lot of The Pono Place, a faith-based community outreach organization, where he had performed court-directed community service.
Gouveia testified that the "male under the vehicle pointed the firearm at him and was 1 foot away from him when he was shot at," Nagata said.
He testified he thought he was going to die after Martin shot him in the hip and thigh. Nagata said he used a black and silver 9 mm semi-automatic pistol.
One of the officers fired back and Martin fled.
Acting on a tip from a relative, police found Martin the following day at his relatives’ Hilo home with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest.
Gouveia, 32, who was wounded in his left thigh and suffered a fractured pelvic bone, testified the bullet broke into about 30 fragments and remains in his body.
He said he still suffers pain in both hips.
Hatada, 41, suffered injuries to his left calf and right heel.
Both officers have returned to duty.
Martin’s attorney, Steven Strauss, did not return calls for comment.
