The NCAA’s investigation of the University of Hawaii men’s basketball team shows signs of expanding beyond the original document-altering inquiry.
Multiple players not initially connected to the issue surrounding assistant coach Brandyn Akana said they have either already been interviewed by NCAA investigators or have been requested to make themselves available to be interviewed.
Asked if the investigation was widening, athletic director Ben Jay said, "I’m not going to comment." Asked if more players would be interviewed, Jay said, "I won’t comment."
An NCAA investigator was on campus in March and UH coaches and players said they have been told by the NCAA and Jay not to talk to the media.
But redshirt freshman center Caleb Dressler, who has been released from the program and will enroll at Central Washington in the fall, said he was interviewed on the phone by an NCAA official who spoke to UH officials about wide-ranging aspects of UH head coach Gib Arnold’s program.
While declining to go into specifics with the Star-Advertiser, Dressler said he was willing to volunteer what he knew to the NCAA, which included topics such as practice time and the team’s study hall schedule.
"A lot of the stuff was about Akana and what was going on there," Dressler said. "Things that were not usual, in a sense, at the time. They wanted to ask me questions about what was going on and I had some information that I knew about. So I wanted to give them everything that I could."
Dressler, who had season-ending back surgery early in the 2013-14 year and did not play in a game in two seasons at UH, added, "I know they’ve been bringing in more people to talk about this, so I know it’s a continued investigation."
Junior point guard Keith Shamburger, who is also departing the program, told the Star-Advertiser he was also scheduled to be interviewed by the NCAA shortly.
An NCAA spokeswoman said in an email, "Due to rules put in place by the membership, we cannot comment on current, pending or potential investigations."
The NCAA was first advised of an issue concerning an "addition" to a document said to have been sent to UH concerning an international recruit in January.
Missouri transfer Stefan Jankovic of Ontario was the only player added during that period.
At the beginning of the season, Akana was listed as an assistant coach and the team’s recruiting coordinator.
Akana was suspended for 30 days by UH and missed 12 of the team’s final 14 games.
Subsequently, an NCAA investigator was on campus in March and interviewed at least six people at UH.
Arnold said at the time Akana’s absences were "absolutely nothing."
Akana has not returned phone messages left by the Star-Advertiser. Arnold did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday.
The team postseason banquet is Thursday night at the Sheraton Waikiki hotel. UH finished 20-11 after falling in the first round of the Big West tournament.
