Spearman honored as UH’s MVP
Hawaii men’s basketball senior guard Brandon Spearman was honored with a rebranded MVP award on Thursday at the team’s 2013-14 postseason banquet at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel.
Spearman, a tri-captain, was presented by coach Gib Arnold with the "Tip of the Spear Award" in place of the traditional Art Woolaway Most Outstanding Player Award.
The rebranded award represents five attributes: humility, enthusiasm, accountability, relentlessness and teammanship, Arnold said.
Spearman was an all-around contributor statistically and a vocal presence for a team that went 20-11, the program’s best record in a decade.
"I’ll forever be grateful for the opportunity I had here in Hawaii," Spearman told the banquet crowd.
Fujikawa tied for 33rd at Columbia Open
Honolulu’s Tadd Fujikawa shot an even-par 71 for the second day in a row on Thursday at the eGolf Tour’s Columbia Open in Blythewood, S.C.
Fujikawa is tied for 33rd with seven others at 142 — which turned out to be the cut line — heading into Friday’s third round, 10 strokes behind leader Ryan Sullivan.
Nguyen selected to NCAA championship
The University of Hawaii’s Cindy Nguyen was selected to compete in the NCAA Division I women’s tennis championship May 21-26 in Athens, Ga.
Nguyen, a freshman from Long Beach, Calif., earned the Big West Conference’s automatic bid to the tournament as the highest-ranking player (No. 123) in the conference and will be the only Big West player entered.
Nguyen led UH with a 22-4 overall singles record and posted a 17-3 record in dual matches. She was 6-1 in Big West play and won 11 straight matches to end the regular season.
Nguyen is the first Rainbow Wahine to be selected to play in the NCAA tournament. Prior to the NCAAs, Leslie Moe (1966), Judy Leong (1966-67), Rosie Thomas (1981-84) and Rosie Vera Cruz (1981-84) competed in the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women/USTA championships.
