‘Iolani has been unchallenged in the Stanford Carr Development/HHSAA Girls Water Polo State Championships so far, beating No. 3 seed Lahainaluna 20-4 in Thursday’s quarterfinals on the Big Island after beating Kaiser 18-1 in the first round.
The Raiders led 6-1 after one quarter against Lahainaluna and 9-2 at halftime. Mollie Taylor and Kiana Harpstrite led ‘Iolani with five goals, followed by Kelsie Kodama and Logan Kim with four each. Taylor has scored eight goals in two games for ‘Iolani, and nine different players have tallied goals.
The Raiders, who were the ILH runners-up after suffering their only three losses of the season to Punahou, move on to play OIA champion Kahuku.
The Red Raiders doubled up on Roosevelt 12-6 in the second round behind four goals from Kahea Kahaulelio.
Punahou, which has won the tournament in each of the past six years, and Mililani will play in the second semifinal after the Buffanblu beat Kapolei 12-3 behind goals from eight different players. Mililani survived a wild game with Kamehameha-Hawaii to win 16-13.
The Trojans led 16-10 with three minutes left before the home team scored three goals. Chanel Long led Mililani with six goals, Acacia Trusdell tallied four for the Warriors.
An ILH team has won the tournament in each of the 10 years it has existed, with Punahou taking it eight times, including the last six.
