Dolan qualifies for U.S. canoe/kayak team
Kailua’s Ryan Dolan qualified for the USA Canoe/Kayak Team after winning two events and finishing second in another at last week’s USACK Sprint Trials in Oklahoma City.
Dolan won the 1,000-meter K1 race and teamed with Zoltan David of Las Vegas to win the K2 200-meter event. He also finished second in the K1 200-meter race.
In other events, Hawaii’s Robert Bradley and Justin Nichols were third in the junior K2 1,000-meters and Kawika Kaleleiki and Kainalu Obayashi fifth.
The USCKT will compete at the world championships this summer in Hungary.
Gymnasts qualify for Junior Olympics
Three Hawaii Level 10 gymnasts qualified for the USAG Junior Olympics and eight at Level 9 qualified for this weekend’s Western Regionals after last weekend’s Region 2 women’s regional championships in Helena, Mont.
Among those qualifying were Maela Lazaro from Rainbow Gymnastics, who took the bronze in the all-around Level 10 Junior C Division. She also took silver on vault and beam, and bronze in floor.
Jenna Domingo, from Hawaiian Island Twisters, took gold on beam and fourth on vault and all-around at the Level 10 Junior A Division. Also qualifying was HITS’ Lauren Lauro, who was fourth on vault, bars and beams, and fifth in all-around in the Junior C Division.
At Level 9, Karly Gushiken from Rainbow Gymnastics earned gold in the all-around at the Senior B Division. She also took gold on vaults, silver on bars and beam, and sixth on floor. Brittney Wolfe of Island Tumbler Gymnastics took bronze in the all-around in the Junior D, as well as gold on beam. Miya Makabe of Rainbow Gymnastics took the bronze in the Senior A all-around, silver on beam and bronze on vault.
Also qualifying out of Level 9 were: Janyce Apuya, Rainbow Gymnastics, Senior A; Ciello Magsanide, Rainbow Gymnastics, Junior B; Mariah Tanner, HITS, Junior C; Chloe Camello, Rainbow Gymnastics, Senior A; and Savannah Lohr, HITS, Senior D.
At Level 8, which does not advance to regional competition, HITS’ Logan Agcaoili earned silver in the all-around at Child B. She also took gold in the floor, tied for first in the bars and silver on vaults. The Level 8 Hawaii State All-Star Team placed fourth behind Washington, Oregon and Idaho.
Gymnastics gold for Vasquez
Victor Vasquez from Hawaiian Island Twisters took gold in the all-around at last week’s Region 1 Men’s Gymnastics Regional Championships in Phoenix.
Vaquez competed at Level 6 in the 12- to 18-year-old division. He also took gold on parallel bars and bronze on rings. He was one of nine Hawaii athletes competing at the event where only Level 8-10 are eligible to move on to the Junior Olympic national championships.
Ezekiel Domingo took gold on the high bar in the Level 6 12-18 group. The Hawaii State All-Star Team was fourth at regionals. Members were Vasquez, Domingo, Jason Redlew, Emanuele Muehlhauser and Jayden Paulino.
Harlequins repeat as rugby champions
Rowan Newton scored on four penalty kicks and made three conversions to lead the Hawaii Harlequins over the Titans Rugby Club on Saturday for the Rugby Hawaii Union championship at Kapiolani Park.
The Harlequins used four penalty kicks to take a 9-7 lead at halftime en route to successfully defending their RHU title.
Molokai race deadline Sunday
Pre-registration for the May 18 Maui Jim Molokai Challenge and World Surfski Championships is due Sunday for the discounted price.
The course is from Kaluakoi, Molokai, to the Hawaii Kai marina on Oahu. The event is open to surf skis, paddleboards, stand-up paddleboards, V1s and OC1s and OC2s in solo and relay divisions. The fees increase by $50 for solo paddlers and $90 for relay teams from Monday through May 11.
May is national bike month
The Hawaii Bicycling League is celebrating National Bike Month in May with month-long events, workshops and commuter challenges. Kicking off the events will be Saturday’s "Walk Story," with Better Block Hawaii. The informal walk is free and will explore the neighborhood surrounding the Honolulu Museum of Art, Blaisdell Arena and Kaka’ako. Also scheduled are the Cyclofemme Ride on May 10, Bike to Work Day on May 16 and various social rides May 17, 18 and 29.
