Body of missing kayaker is found in stream
Kauai firefighters and police recovered a body believed to be that of a female kayaker reported missing Thursday night.
The body was located at about 11:30 a.m. Friday in a stream about a quarter-mile from Uluwehi Falls in Wailua.
Police are investigating the incident but do not believe that foul play was involved in the woman’s death.
On Thursday an employee from a kayak rental company went looking for a woman who had failed to return her rented kayak by the 5 p.m. deadline. The employee located a kayak and paddle in the Wailua River but found no sign of the woman.
An autopsy on the body will be conducted sometime early next week.
Waipahu man in custody after bus stop robbery
A 22-year-old Waipahu man was charged after he allegedly robbed a man Tuesday.
Bail for Lafoga Tulafale was set at $30,000.
Police said the incident occurred just after 4:30 p.m. near a bus stop adjacent to Leeward Community College.
Besides the arrest on suspicion of second-degree robbery, the suspect was taken into custody for probation violation and an outstanding bench warrant Tuesday afternoon.
Man allegedly snatches cash from business
A 20-year-old Kaimuki man was charged with theft after he allegedly took money from a cash register at an Aala Park area business at about 4 p.m. Thursday.
Bail for Cyrus Michael was set at $50,000. The suspect was arrested at Beretania Community Park on suspicion of second-degree theft and interference with the reporting of an emergency or crime, a petty misdemeanor.
1 dead and 3 hurt after SUV collides with truck on Kauai
A 58-year-old Washington state man died and three people were injured — one critically — in a two-vehicle crash Thursday in Kilauea, Kauai.
The victim was identified as George Nielson.
Shortly after 4 p.m. the driver of a Chevrolet sport utility vehicle was traveling on Kuhio Highway near Pili Road and attempted to make a turn from a southbound lane when struck by an oncoming Ford truck, according to Kauai police.
Nielson was one of four occupants in the SUV. Police said a 62-year-old female passenger is in critical condition at the Queen’s Medical Center. The driver, 61, and another female passenger, 56, suffered non-life-threatening injuries. They were transported to Wilcox Hospital in stable condition. Police said the driver of the truck, 55, was not injured.
Pepeekeo man identified as victim in Thursday crash
A 54-year-old man who died Thursday after his car crossed the centerline and sideswiped another vehicle on Route 19 on Hawaii island was identified as Colin Y. Ishii of Pepeekeo.
Hawaii County police said the crash occurred just before 2 p.m. on Route 19 near the 9-mile marker in Pepeekeo.
The victim was driving a 1998 Toyota four-door sedan and traveling north on Route 19 when he crossed the centerline and sideswiped a 2013 Ford flatbed truck, traveling south, driven by a 29-year-old Naalehu man. The driver of the Ford was not injured.
An 82-year-old woman, who was a passenger in the Toyota, was taken to Hilo Medical Center. She did not receive any significant injuries. Ishii was taken to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:24 p.m.
Police opened a negligent-homicide investigation.
