One match is all that separates Mililani’s Alyssa Tobita from a 4-peat in girls singles.
The senior swept past third seed Lani-Rae Green out Waimea 7-5, 6-1 in the semifinal round of the Carlsmith Ball/HHSAA State Tennis Championships on Maui on Friday.
She got into the semifinal with a quarterfinal win earlier in the day, a sweep of sixth seed Serena Le of Punahou, 6-0, 6-0. Tobita faces St. Francis’ Taylor Lau for the title.
In girls doubles, the top two seeds advanced to the final. ‘Iolani’s Sari Kwee and Kara Okazaki swept No. 3 seed Sarah Ikioka and Kylee Kato of Kamehameha-Maui 6-3, 6-4. Kwee and Okazaki face Punahou’s Skyla Alcon and Cori Cummings. The Punahou duo easily got past Hilo’s Kelly Soares and Emily Soares, 6-2, 6-0.
On the boys side, Punahou’s Kawika Lam is one win away from his second straight singles title as he advanced with two wins.
Lam got past Hawaii Prep’s JJ Minakata in a 6-2, 6-2 quarterfinal and then defeated teammate McKenna Fujitani 6-0, 6-2 in the semifinal. His opponent is Hawaii Baptist’s Jeffrey Liang. The second seed swept Seabury Hall’s Shayan Shirkhodai 6-0, 6-0 in a quarterfinal and then Mililani’s Sage Leaman 6-1, 6-2 in a semifinal.
Boys doubles features the top seed and the seventh seed in the championship. The top-seeded tandem out of Punahou, Zander Kim and Jon Costales, beat schoolmates and No. 3 seed Jacob Blaisdell And Austin Hamamoto 7-5, 6-3. Mid-Pacific’s Seann Esaki and Braxton Chong upset ‘Iolani’s Ryan Chang and Riley Inn 6-2, 7-5 in the other semifinal.
