Get to know our next UH president
The two finalists for University of Hawaii president are traveling the islands, participating in public forums with students, faculty and members of the broader community.
Interim President David Lassner and Lt. Gen. Francis Wiercinski are speaking at UH-Manoa, Leeward Community College, Kauai Community College, Maui College and the University of Hawaii-Hilo.
In each instance, though, they’re appearing solo — no chance of running into the competition on campus.
Now is the time to get to know these leaders, before the UH Board of Regents makes its selection next month. For details on the listening tour, see http://bit.ly/1fRAhVM.
Maybe we should wear our luggage
It’s not clear what this says about Hawaii travelers in general, or Hawaiian Airlines in particular, that the state’s largest carrier has beat the industry trends on baggage revenue.
During a year when airlines nationally bagged 4 percent less in luggage fees, Hawaiian Air cashed in with more: $70 million in 2013, up 3.3 percent. This might simply be one of the benefits of being in a market with little competition. But it’s startling when you consider that a lot of the business is interisland, and aren’t you supposed to pack lightly for such jaunts?
Maybe there will be further innovations in the realm of wearable luggage. The Internet is full of ads for vests that can be stuffed with your stuff. There’s even one that can convert into a bag once you leave the plane.
None of them are in aloha print, though. That might be a new manufacturing niche for some entrepreneurial type.
