The five runs Nanakuli gave up in the OIA White championship were no cause for concern.

Chyanne Koko spread six hits and struck out eight in six innings and Nanakuli beat Konawaena 9-0 in the first round of the Division II state softball championships at Central Oahu Regional Park on Wednesday.

"I felt strong today," Koko said. "We went out with a bang. Instead of going off soft, we went off strong."

Koko allowed five runs in a win over Aiea in Nanakuli’s last game two weeks ago, the first time the Golden Hawks had allowed as many since the first game of the season. With Nanakuli’s bats, it can afford a bad game on defense.

"It was a good way to start. I thought we were a little sloppy," Nanakuli coach Ricky Gusman said. "It is good to get the first game through. You never know who is going to show up. We will be sharp tomorrow."

Nanakuli pounded out 15 hits, with Jenai Halemano and Emma Kawaiaea each getting three and Koko contributing two. Precious Paulo-Meyers added a home run for Nanakuli. The Golden Hawks added four stolen bases to their power game.

"We managed to get some runs," Gusman said. "The defense made some good plays on us, but we capitalized a lot on errors, took advantage of those things that were presented to us."

Koko allowed singles in both the first and second innings, but stranded the runners with strikeouts. She was perfect in the fourth and fifth after getting the lead in the bottom of the second.

Koko walked to lead off the inning and promptly stole second. Ashley Van Gieson lined out to Konawaena shortstop Bethany Batangan for the second out of the inning, but Batangan threw the ball away trying for the double play and Koko scooted around third for Nanakuli’s first run.

Two pitches later, Charallen Mahoe hit a home run deep to left field for a 2-0 lead.

Nanakuli scored three more runs in the third on a leadoff home run by Halemano and two more hits and three Konawaena errors. 

Nanakuli got a little sloppy in the fifth, with Koko throwing the ball down the right-field line on a bunt when nobody covered first base, but struck out Shylessia Jose and Kalia Kaupe Deleon and forced Kiersen Kahele to line out to second to end the threat. 

Koko, Nanakuli’s ace, left the circle after that and Emma Kawaiaea closed it out.
