Hawaii will send at least one golfer to the U.S. Women’s Open after Monday’s 36-hole Sectional Qualifier at Waialae Country Club.
Last year, Punahou freshman Mariel Galdiano followed up her state high school championship by claiming a place in her second U.S. Women’s Open. The last group goes out at 8:42 a.m. for the first 18 holes and 1:42 p.m. for the final 18. There are 23 Hawaii golfers competing, including Cassy Isagawa, Brittany Fan, Cyd Okino and Rose Huang. Two from Japan are also trying to qualify, along with one each from the Philippines and California.
The U.S. Women’s Open is June 19-22 at the Pinehurst Resort & Country Club, Pinehurst No. 2, in North Carolina.
Hoakalei Country Club and King Kamehameha Golf Club will host U.S. Open Local Qualifiers on Saturday. More than 60 professionals and amateurs will compete for the two qualifying spots at each site, including Nick Mason, Sam Cyr, John Oda and PJ Samiere.
Qualifiers move on to one of 13 Sectional Qualifiers to be played June 3.
