UH’s Morrison second in BWC heptathlon
The University of Hawaii’s Kaleigh Morrison is in second place after four disciplines in the heptathlon at the Big West Conference Championships on Friday at UC Davis’ Toomey Field & Woody Wilson Track in Davis, Calif.
Morrison, who finished seventh in the event last year, totaled 3,010 points, 18 behind first-day leader Danielle Littleton of UC Riverside. UH sophomore Kayla Kirk is in 15th place with 2,324 points.
Morrison, a senior from Tigard, Ore., began the day with a personal-best time of 14.52 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles, third-best on the day. She then posted the best high jump of 5-foot-6 and threw the third-best shot put mark of 33-83/4. Morrison ended the day running the 200 in 26.83 seconds.
The final three disciplines are scheduled for Saturday.
Kaiwi channel relay race Sunday
Some 150 paddlers from six foreign counties, the U.S mainland and Hawaii are entered in Sunday’s 25th PA’A Kahala Kaiwi Channel Relay, a 41-mile race from Kaluakoi, Molokai, to Magic Island on Oahu.
Paddlers from Australia, Japan, Canada, New Zealand, Russia and Great Britain are in the field of one-man outrigger canoes with teams of two alternating paddling time.
The first finishers are expected around 1:30 p.m. in the Paddling Athlete’s Association event. PA’A’s next race is the Kaiwi Channel Solo Race May 25.
