A decided weakness last season for the Hawaii women’s basketball team — depth in the post — could become a strength in 2014-15.
Rainbow Wahine coach Laura Beeman announced Wednesday the signing of 5-foot-11 power forward Raja Moreno-Ross, a first-team NJCAA Division II All-American from Pima (Ariz.) Community College.
Moreno-Ross averaged 13.2 points and 9.2 rebounds. She had 12 double-doubles in 32 games. With two years of eligibility remaining, Moreno-Ross could help make up for the loss of departed four-year double-double machine Kamilah Jackson.
"I think she’s going to help us make up some of the rebounding that we will definitely be missing," Beeman said. "She will also give us added depth in that four-position, where if we want to play a little bit smaller, she’s going to be a tough matchup. She can take the ball off the bounce a little bit … and get to the basket."
Beeman previously signed post players Rachel Morris and Brianna Kennedy this spring, but Moreno-Ross is expected to add something a little different.
"She’s just full of energy," Beeman said. "She can defend and really just get up and down the floor for us. So she’s going to be something a little different and unique from what we have on our roster right now."
Moreno-Ross would have been the seventh signee of the 2014-15 class, but one of four signees from the fall, guard Kandiss Barber of Mater Dei Catholic High, didn’t pan out and was released from her obligation.
Six players still represents, by far, the largest signing class of Beeman’s three years as coach.
"Signing a big class is something we needed to do," she said. "You know, we lost four talented seniors and we definitely needed to be able to replace them, and not replace them with just one type (of) player. … My goal since walking in here has been to get depth and I think this will be the first year that we have depth, one through five. And that’s exciting."
Beeman also announced the addition of two priority walk-ons.
The first is a local product, guard Breana Jones of Maryknoll. The 6-foot-plus Jones is expected to be played on the perimeter by Beeman, similar to the versatile mold of Ashleigh Karaitiana.
The other walk-on is Justice Toailoa, a 5-foot-10 forward out of Salesian High in Richmond, Calif. She is expected to bring defensive prowess from a team that was runner-up for a state championship.
"These priority walk-ons are talented and if they know they can get a scholarship in the years to come, I think they’re going to work pretty hard every day."
