Joshua Muneno tossed a five-hitter and Maryknoll broke open a tight game with an 11-run sixth inning in a 14-1 runaway win over Radford in the Division II opening round of the Wally Yonamine Foundation/HHSAA Baseball State Championships.
A crowd of about 300 watched at Hans L’Orange Park. Maryknoll (16-3), the ILH champion and top seed, will meet Kauai in a semifinal matchup today, 1 p.m., at Les Murakami Stadium. Maryknoll is the defending D-II champion.
"You can never take anybody lightly. We knew we’d have to make adjustments in this game," Spartans coach Randy Yamashiro said, referring to Radford ace Landyn Bartness. "We had to let the ball come to us and not get in front of the ball. He hides the ball well when he’s on."
Muneno, a junior right-hander, struck out three and walked three. Radford scored a run in the fourth inning to tie the game, but Maryknoll answered with two runs in the top of the fifth and Muneno did the rest. His defense was flawless while Radford committed seven errors.
"I just had to find my rhythm. All my pitches were working pretty well. I just let them hit and let my defense work behind me," he said.
OIA runner-up Radford (11-3) was scrappy and up to the challenge early. For four innings, it was a pitchers duel between Muneno and Bartness. Maryknoll scored in the top of the first when Michael Nishiki doubled and later scored on Justin Ushio’s sacrifice fly.

Radford stayed close and finally broke through against Muneno in the fourth.
Radford’s defensive lapses played a big role the rest of the way, as did a parade of walks permitted by Ram pitchers.
The Spartans scored twice in the top of the fifth to regain the lead. Brent Hironaga reached on an infield single and advanced to second on an overthrow by shortstop Jacob Nishitomi. Trevor Hirano then laid down a sacrifice bunt that was bobbled by third baseman Kekai Mamuad-Rin and Maryknoll had two runners on base.
Nishiki, who went 3-for-4, delivered a single to right, scoring Hironaga from third for a 2-1 Spartans lead. Hirano scored on another sacrifice fly by Ushio for a two-run cushion.
Maryknoll then sent 17 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth. Four Radford hurlers issued six walks and a hit batter. The Rams also made three errors and had a passed ball on a third strike.
Hironaga was key with a pair of two-run singles in the inning.
