5 HPU baseball players are all-PacWest
Led by junior outfielder Derek Nakasato’s first-team selection, Hawaii Pacific had five players named to the All-Pacific West Conference team that was announced Thursday.
Also, Kapolei graduate Trey Kamachi, an outfielder for Dixie State, was named freshman of the year and was a second-team pick. Kamachi batted .354 (for the Red Storm with a .450 on-base percentage), 46 runs scored and 32 RBI.
Nakasato, a Saint Louis School graduate, set a school record by hitting safely in 34 consecutive games for the Sea Warriors (30-18, 18-14 PacWest). The left fielder hit .356 in 47 games, with 32 runs and 41 RBIs, and did not commit an error in 79 fielding chances.
HPU had three second-team selections — senior catcher Keanu Kapana (Campbell), sophomore shortstop Tyler Tokunaga (Pearl City) and sophomore pitcher Joshua Garcia (Saint Louis). Named to the third team was senior pitcher Bryson Gauthe (Kailua).
Also named to the first team was Kapolei graduate Kalani Brackenridge, a senior second baseman-shortstop for Academy of Art. The University of Hawaii transfer led the PacWest with 26 stolen bases and hit .280 for the Urban Knights.
Chaminade golfer earns academic honor
Chaminade senior golfer Spencer Ewart was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 8 NCAA Division II At-Large Team, the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) announced Thursday.
Ewart, a senior from Victoria, British Columbia, has a cumulative 3.87 GPA in business program. The Silverswords team captain is eligible for the Capital One academic All-America team, which will be announced next month.
All-region selection for Vulcan Lee
Hawaii Hilo senior outfielder Rebecca Lee was named to the NFCA all-region first team Thursday, the fourth postseason honor for the Vulcan softball player.
Lee was also named to the Daktronics CoSIDA West Region and PacWest first team as well as repeated as PacWest co-player of the year. She led the conference in batting average (.504), doubles (18), slugging percentage (.868), on-base percentage (.585) and steals (20), while ranking fourth in home runs (nine), fifth in RBI (48), sixth in runs (51) and seventh in hits (65).
Sea Warriors sign 3 in basketball
Hawaii Pacific has added three signees in basketball, two for its women’s squad and one for its men’s team.
Joining the Sea Warriors women’s team are guards Kerianne Noonan and Dayanara Armenta.
The 5-foot-6 Noonan is the all-time leading scorer at Windsor (Calif.) High — girls or boys basketball — with over 1,300 career points. The 5-7 Armenta is a junior transfer from Orange Coast College where she was the conference defensive player of the year as a sophomore and the freshman of the year in 2013.
Signing with the Sea Warrior men is Colorado State transfer Josh Morgan, a 6-2 guard who has one year of eligibility. Morgan played one season at Hawaii Hilo before transferring to CSU, where he played two years.
