38th Molokai challenge Sunday
Clint Robinson returns to defend his title against a field that includes 12-time winner Oscar Chalupski in Sunday’s 38th Maui Jim Molokai Challenge & Surfski World Championship.
The 32-mile race across the Kaiwi Channel runs from Kaluakoi, Molokai, to the Hawaii Kai Towne Center Marina. The divisions are for individual and relay teams in solo surfski, SS-2, prone and stand-up paddleboard, V-1, OC-1 and OC-2
Other past champions among the international entries are Australian Grant Kenny and Tahitian Lewis Laughlin (surfski); Australia’s Travis Grant (SUP), Hawaii’s Kai Bartlett and Aaron Napoleon (OC-1) and Australian Brad Gual (prone).
The event, which has a $10,000 purse, concludes the Kanaka Ikaika Racing Association season.
Gymnast medals at Jr. Olympics
Maela Lazaro from Rainbow Gymnastics medaled on the balance beam at last weekend’s USAG Junior Olympic National Championships in Jackson, Miss.
Lazaro, a sophomore at Moanalua High, placed ninth on beam in the Level 10 Junior C Division. She also was 31st on vault, 49th on bars and 56th on floor, adding up to 51st all-around.
Two other gymnasts from the Hawaiian Island Twisters also competed in the field of 448. Lauren Lauro, also competing in the Junior C Division, was 32nd on vault, 45th on beam, 53rd on floor, 56th on vault and 53rd all-around, and Jenna Domingo, competing in the Junior A Division, placed 45th on floor, 48th on bars, 52nd on beam and 54th on vault and all-around.
AccesSurf fundraiser Saturday
Watermen Rich Julian and Ralph Goto will be honored with the "Ocean of Possibilities" award at Saturday’s AccesSurf fundraiser.
The event is from 2:30 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Hard Rock Cafe in Waikiki. Tickets are $60 with proceeds going to the program that provides adaptive surfing instruction and ocean recreation activities to those with disabilities.
