Baseball coach Mike Trapasso and men’s volleyball coach Charlie Wade are among a group of coaches who could receive multi-year contract extensions by the end of the month.
At least six of 12 head coaches who had been offered term sheets earlier this year, some of them with what has been described as "slight bumps" in pay, have reached agreements in principle. Athletic director Ben Jay said, "I’m going to move ahead (on them)."
Jay said, "I’m probably going to move a block of them to the chancellor so we can get those things done."
Under UH policy, contract extensions that do not exceed three years or reach $500,000 annually, may be approved by the Manoa Chancellor and need not go before the Board of Regents.
"I’ve got to get them off my plate; I’ve got enough going on," Jay said.
Trapasso, whose contract expires Aug. 31, and Wade, whose agreement ends June 9, are said to be among those in line for multi-year extensions.
Trapasso is 19-28 this season and 379-357 in 13 seasons and has a listed base salary of $175,008, including a $40,008 "overload" largely funded by "booster" funds, according to his contract.
Wade, who was 15-12 this year and 67-72 in five seasons, had a listed base salary of $105,000.
Jay said he was still in negotiations with an attorney for men’s basketball coach Gib Arnold, among other coaches.
"I haven’t had a chance to sit down with a couple of coaches who want to talk to me about their term sheets, so I still need to knock a few more of those out," Jay said.
Arnold’s contract was to expire June 30, but under terms of the deal signed in 2011, he is to receive an automatic one-year extension by virtue of winning 20 games this season.
Arnold, who is 72-55 in four seasons, has a base salary of $344,000, $50,000 of which is classified as an "overload" and paid from "university-solicited donations," according to the contract.
The agent for women’s basketball coach Laura Beeman, who is in the final year of her initial three-year contract that expires March 26, 2015, is said to be finalizing contract details. Beeman was 17-14 this year and 34-28 in two seasons is believed to have a salary of about $125,000.
