A fire Thursday night destroyed a building that housed offices for Suisan Co., a major fish distributor on Hawaii island.
At 10:32 p.m. Thursday, 24 firefighters responded to the blaze at the Suisan warehouse off Kamehameha Avenue in Waiakea. The company’s business and management offices were in the structure.
Spokeswoman Barbara Hastings said fresh seafood operations continued uninterrupted Friday.
According to a news release by the Hawaii Fire Department, the fire was under control at 1:05 a.m. and extinguished at 3:30 a.m. Police closed the Kamehameha Avenue extension near the warehouse as firefighters battled the blaze.
The fire engulfed the western end of the 16,000-square-foot structure. It’s unclear whether anyone was in the building at the time of the fire.
In an emailed statement, Suisan President Glenn Hashimoto said the company is thankful no one was injured. "We are resilient and will work things out," he said.
The cause of the fire is under investigation. Suisan and its insurance carrier will determine the extent of the damage to the structure and its contents.
The company’s delivery fleet was not affected. Sales calls normally handled at the Hilo office were transferred to the Kona office.
Suisan, a major fish and food and product distribution company, was founded in 1907 by Japanese immigrants as a place for fishermen to sell their catch, according to its website. The company employs 175 people.
